With or without Side bar ??

With side bar and 2 of the pins are the mushroom pins. Previously I was trying to pick it fully pinned and didn't realize the deep false sets were from the mushrooms. Still working on the feel for properly rotated pins, they don't always snap into place but have on a few occasions. I can tell by the plug rotation that they are properly rotated but when it's fully pinned I don't think the lock will give that same feedback, at least not as much as with just 3.

After first seeing it in Gumptricks collection (ty for posting) I picked up the smaller Solex padlock for myself. I didn't rotate the plug enough to release the shackle though..

I have had the same problem with the Medecos greengrow. I also progressively pinned mine when I was learning them, and on 2 or 3 pins I got heaps of feedback and could easily tell whether the mushies were set or not, but once up to 6 everything changes ;) I have opened a few different Medecos, and a few times, but they aree definately not my strong point.

PS After seeing your 3KS pick, I pulled mine out. Opened with one sidebar, and I'm up to a false set with both in, all 12 sliders. Just have to identify the binder and take it out of the false gate.. Thanks man!

After seeing greengrow's pick I knew I had to get this one out of the box >:) Thanks man! Thanks also go to GWiens for sending it to me.

Hammered away on it for a couple of hours each day over the last 3 or so, seemed to be getting so close many times, but no matter how many times I moved those binders around, the thing just wouldn't open. Realised today that I had forgotten about the profile bar at the top, which I had facing down the whole time holding the cylinder.. Doh! Turned it over so the profile bar would hang down and 5 minutes later it was open! So based on that, I probably have opened it a half dozen times at least already :P Gotta love this hobby!

Great to hear. And you gave a very well-written breakdown of the issue and solution. I am sure this will help someone else who is having a similar issue.

That realization always helps me get my confidence back. Anytime you can tell yourself, "It's not incompetence, it's forgetfulness.'" It is easier to make a comeback!

Great job adi! I also had the feeling of being on the verge of it opening over the days I worked on it. The true gates were not as obvious to me as some of the other slider locks I've worked on. Ended up that slider 6 on the left side was in the wrong gate the entire time I was picking it.

I'm still working on the Medecos, I have the feeling it's gonna be a long time before I can open them with any regularity. I did get 5/6 pins picked a few times over the last couple days, but the process isn't as systematic as I'd like.

Got both of these open tonight fully pinned. I think I have a technique down for detecting the properly rotated pins. Going to continue to practice, recently I ordered a surplus of Medeco pins to change these up.

I received the Interactive's from the ebay auction Adi mentioned last week. Thanks again for the heads up. They were all KD which I was happy to see and will make great practice locks. Got a small stack of them picked tonight.

It's cool seeing some picked Abloys. Also just watched your black hat presentation, it was really enjoyable and well done. Nice job man!

S&G Environmental Padlocks (These are pretty simple when you have the key in front of you, but it's something new for me. Also have some group 2 safe locks coming. I'm trying to switch things up from the pin tumbler type locks I've been working on.)

Thanks man, it was a really enjoyable talk to research. Abloy Classic share a lot in common with the S&G enviro's. I'd love to know why the S&G has that little cutout in the centre of the discs though. Having that on all the discs makes a tool much easier to make because it offers you at least one element of a tool that can rotate centrally, rather than having to cam around the edge like with Abloy Classic/High profile.

Having purchased many abused locks from eBay, my hypothesis is that if the middle is drilled out, the lock will still open with the key if the disks are damaged by someone jamming something in there. I don't think Environmental padlocks are meant to be pick resistant, I think they're designed to open with the key no matter how much ice and bad weather they're subjected to. My opinion is that there's a design flaw with the cap in that water can get into the innards that way - putting a piece of tuk tape over the top would help a lot I think. Interestingly enough, the smaller environmental padlocks are much more abloy like, and have more disks.

Your presentation on the Western Electric pay phone exploit was very interesting. I would think that cashing in that many dimes or quarters would raise some eyebrows. Your blackhat presentation was very interesting indeed!

Where can I see these talks guys? My google-fu is failing me :/ Does somebody have links to both the Black Hat and the Payphone presentations?

A padlock I got as a souvenir from Mexico. It's a PHILLIPS 114, one of the most common locks I saw there. Nothing fancy, but a nice one.

Cheers :)
