Master Lock Cylinder Stainless Steel Lock

Postby Jumpher » 12 Nov 2003 22:22

Okay, purse was stolen - keys were lost - can't get into the storage unit to get the Christmas Tree out. HELP!!! I've tried bolt cutters, can't get the cutters in there to cut it. ATE a hacksaw. Owners of unit say, nothing they can do but call the locksmith who wants to charge $250 to get it off. Any ideas?

drill it or pick it. That or tell us where you live and if a LP101 member lives around ya, who knows, they might come do it for free. Not your address, just a general area.

Yeah...don't call that locksmith..$250??? That's insane, and I'm a locksmith...sheesh...anyways...

If you have access to one, you can drill the lock. You didn't say so, but I'm assuming this is a padlock and not one of the "hockey puck" style locks.

Anyways, flip the lock so you can see the bottom. You'll see what looks like a rivet. You want to drill this off. When you do, a plate, and the lock cylinder will fall out. Then, take a screwdriver and twist the cam inside, the shackle should pop open. You can then take the lock to a more reasonably priced locksmith, have the part replaced for about $2.00 and get them to rekey the padlock for you.

Hope that helps.

Now I know why people don't like locksmiths......  :(

Varjeal,
What are your "lockpicking" rates? Does it depend on time or difficulty of lock?

The lock is one of those hockey puck kinds, like the picture up on the menu bar for shop.....
I have no idea what the rates for locksmith's are. I called the people who own the storeage units and explained to them the problem. They in turn gave me the estimate and said soon as I come in and pay it, they will send out "their" locksmith. I'm technically not allowed to hire anyone else - something to do with the tenants clause I signed.

The "average" rate ranges from $30-$50 during normal business hours for most locksmiths. If travel is involved then there is mileage on top of that. Even factoring in replacement cost of the lock it shouldn't be $250. Sounds like a scam to me.

Anyways, I charge $35 for a "lockout" Replacing the lock would be extra of course, and my rates don't change for difficulty unless it's a safe or something similar, then it's $45/hr.

If it's exactly like the lock in the picture, you can still drill it. You'll need a fairly small bit and a piece of wire and screw driver. Drill a small hole just "above" where the pins are(Note: Not in the keyway itself). Drill as straight as you possible can. You'll feel the drill "jump" each time it hits a chamber. Stop when you've drilled 5. Insert screwdriver and turn. If it won't turn, get your piece of wire and stick it into the hole you've drilled, and remove any debris and push the top pins up. Turn screwdriver to open.

You'll most likely be obligated to buy a lock from them, but it'll be cheaper than paying the overprice locksmith, who probably is giving the person who owns the storage rate a cut anyways.

That really ticks me off.

 Good luck.

I don't know why I didn't mention it, this is a lock picking forum...you could purchase some picks and then try picking the lock yourself. This would actually end up saving you more in the long run anyways, and you pick up an interesting hobby. :)

You'd want to check your state rules on purchase and possession, but it's worth a shot, and much cheaper to boot.

Hi Varjeal,

Do these lock not have hardened inserts to protect the cylinder from being drilled. If its is the pro series I thought it might have this feature?

Cheers

None of the Pro Series that I've sold or serviced have anti-drill features unless it is the variety that have IC or drill-resistant cylinders from high security manufacturers...their regular cylinders do not have that feature.
