Pinning kits 0.003 vs 0.005

Postby Moses057 » 1 Sep 2017 2:28

I was thinking about getting a universal pinning kit so I could easily repin my practice locks and any locks I buy on eBay. Which one is better? 0.003 or 0.005?

Hello and welcome! I see you have been busy around the forum.

This is a fairly common question and already has some good threads with answers, please try out the Search tool on the left, Im sure it will yield some useful results.

Personally, I owned a LAB .003 and found it worked very well for all my rekeying needs.

there are several kits on ebay. Some used and also new. The best buy I have found id's from CLK Supplies. The pro version of the 003 kit is $145 with free shipping. Some on ebay are listed at almost $100 more.

I would think .003 would allow you to be at a closer tolerance, If funds permit, I think adding the .005 could increase the ability to have closer tolerances all around. Do many or most have Both?

I have both, but I also have specific kits for Schlage, Sargent, and Weiser. The SFIC pins are different, so there's another kit, and I have a kit for Master padlocks too. This has covered my repinning needs so far.

The 0.003 " is the way to go for sure.

Another thing I don't see mentioned here is that the pins are crowned on these 0.003 " kits while the 0.005 " have flat tops with chamfered edges. Therefore, not only do the pins come in more sizes, but they allow for smoother operation if your keys aren't cut quite right.

Ok 0.003 it is. So, would you guys recommend the LAB super wedge or some other brand?

LAB is probably the route to go. If you simply want a pinning kit, CLK Supplies has the LAB Pro 003 for $145. The wedge is $210 from them.

I hate that wedge one. I use a couple ancient Zipf kits, they hold more pins and the rounded bottoms of each compartment make getting pins out much easier.

I have a Lab mini .003 and a Zipf .005 - the price was right on ebay!
