That is much older than 1940s/1950s more like 1880.

I believe the lock to be a Yale L-2 and yes a Victor Cast Iron Fire Safe as seen in McOmie's Antique Safes book page 172

I think it is a little newer than that, more like 1900ish. If you clean the paint off the knob of the dial you may find the Oct 2, 1888 patent. It also has the dial without the cross piece and a separate handle for the bolt work. Earlier models had this style dial, no handle, and the lock was not in it's own case. Of coarse, both designs may have overlapped. This safe has the 88 patent. David, if you pull the wheel pack email me a picture of how the spindle shaft is mounted underneath.

Removing the dial was difficult due to the spline key. I had to apply heat and broke one of my mini screwdrivers getting it out.

Safe is giving up its secrets (including that it's been drilled). Not sure if I want to remove the new paint and leave it as original as possible or if I want to completely refinish it. I would welcome feedback.
