Secure locked money box

Secure locked money box

Postby DangerDane » 8 Nov 2017 5:29

I have been unsuccessfully searching for a secure moneybox. All the ones I can find has poor locks that someone can open with more or less nothing more than a screwdriver. I am aware that the construction of most moneyboxes allows or at least makes it possible to pry it open due to the use of weaker metal or an inadequate thickness of the skin.

But what are my options if I want a secured moneybox, with a proper decent lock, and none of those cheap ones that ar way to easy to open. Or is there not a proper secure quality alternative??

@DangerDane:

Are you asking about a portable "cash box" or are you asking about a small safe/lockbox ?

Cash boxes are meant to be locked inside some other container.

I am talking about a cashbox yes. But what if the cashbox can't be stored within something else in periods??

Try a large pistol safe. Some of them are well-made, although some are junk. Go with a Simplex lock, replace the cam lock with a higher-quality lock, or weld on a hasp and use a padlock.

Will you be using it or an old lady at a church bake sale as the cash box sits on the table in front of her? I have an idea but it may be too heavy duty. Whats your actual use case for it. Does it have to have a tray for different bills and coins or can it just have a slot for putting money in, or do you have to give change as well?

Similar to Squelchtone's question, when the cash box isn't being stored in a secure way, where is it?

I would worry that if it is in an open setting, how weak the metal or the quality of the locking mechanism is not as pressing as how easy it is to grab and run away with.

If it is truly exposed at points, maybe have a method of locking it to what it is resting on, or something nearby, with a padlock.

I guess the question is, what is the situation where the cash box is most vulnerable? And what are those vulnerabilities?

It's for me, and I would prefer that it had a coin tray for returns, but it's not a hard requirement. The reason I am asking is that most if not all of the moneyboxes I see are made of really thin material and with a not very secure lock. And I am surprised no one has actually made a more sturdy or secure variant, even if you are going to store it inside a safe.

Its something I ned to bring with me in my car, hence why I need something a bit more sturdy and secure then a regular moneybox, just to make it more bothersome for someone to actually knick it.

Ok, then my idea may not work for you but this is what I thought of. AMSEC K-1 with Medeco lock was the original one, now even Sentry makes a less expensive clone of this undercounter depository safe. It weighs 9.6 kg

Only catch is, it is more of a 1 way procedure where you keep putting money in, and dont need to give out change or coins.

Is this for a boot sale or some kind of market where you sell things outside your car?

How about this dorm safe meant for university students? It has a cable to lock the box down to something else.

Good luck!

I was thinking along the lines of an old military field safe. They weigh about 100+ pounds and usually have quite good locks. The handles are strong enough to chain down when needed.
