Lock & deadbolt options for driveway gate - Magnet lock??

Thinking of upgrading your door security? Getting a better deadbolt or padlock? Getting a new frame or better hinges? Not sure what brand or model to go with for your particular application? Need a recommendation? Feel free to ask for advice here!

Keedex makes good lock boxes. You can see what they offer online. Your pedestrian gate should have a full length stop, so that the gate swings one way. The DD stuff is OK for a light fence but anything heavy will destroy it. You should include a Locinox closer to hydraulically dampen the closing. Again not know which country you are in is a hindrance, but Locinox is represented everywhere. DD also will offer very little physical security, it is a plastic lock.

I am doing three large pedestrian gates this week, and in all cases for longevity we will be using exit devices (panic bars). In the case of these three gates they will get a surface mount HES electric strike and a prox reader.

Thank you to all of you. After receiving all of your input, I am considering whether the following setup for the pedestrian/service door makes sense:

a) Get a DD Tech lock latch so that I have some mechanism to automatically lock the door when it swings closed...the lock latch PRO SL has these features:

LokkLatch® PRO.SL
• Self-locking operation requires a key to enter & exit
• Operates & locks from both sides of the gate

b) I would like to SUPPLEMENT that with a good lock and deadbolt that I can use at night and when I am away for a few days to further secure the door, for whatever it is worth.

Manual operation is fine, I don't think I am going to go with the electric strike etc at this time.

Which lock and deadbolt do you recommend, in addition to the lock latch??

Thank you

For an external fitting and quality product, I think the Adams Rite swingbolt would be the correct solution.

Good you got it all sorted. Just want to add the following, Originally you mentioned a Maglock, They require constant Voltage. Simplex also makes a Very Good Pushbutton Lock. Mechanical, No Electronics. Electric/Electrical Devices mentioned earlier as being a problem. I live in the Florida Keys, A State Certified Fire/Security/Electrical Integrator/Troubleshooter. Electronics add Convenience, Audit Trail if needed, free from Keys or Fobs. I have a Wide Variety of Systems in the Field in the Field That just seems to last. The Important thing is Using Quality Parts, Quality Wire, Good Connections(Soldered, Heats Shrunk, 3M's 5200, Stainless. I wire Outdoor Systems for Hurricane Conditions, Not Sunny days as others do, they ARE Cheaper, and may use indoor Products Outdoors? Good Luck, Lot of help on this Site in the Future if Needed, A lot of Very Smart People Here. Later

Thank you to all of you for your advice and patience with my queries.

I have ordered a Schlage B252 (double cylinder) lock (thank you @billdeserthills) for the passenger/service gate.

In my comprehension, this has the ability to lock itself when the door is shut and contact is made, and needs a key on either side to open.

While requiring a key to open on exit may be an inconvenience, as this is outdoors, in a residence, and there are other emergency escape for foot traffic, I feel the lock on both sides secures the exit a teeny bit more.

I was informed that this lock will be installed via a lockbox on that gate.

My only concern with the Schlage lock is that the keys can be duplicated anywhere, I asked the retailer if they had any high security keys, and they said no. The most they can do is imprint do not duplicate on the keys.

I am wondering if I can attach an additional deadbolt/lock on the gate, to complement the Schlage. This additional deadbolt/lock should be one which uses a high security key, that is one cannot be duplicated at the neighborhood store...

The reason for this thought is that it may provide additional security if we are away on vacation...an additional lock on the passenger gate with a key that cannot be easily copied.

Of course I understand that there are a million ways around locks etc. but I am just using these as a level 1 deterrent.

Thank you

That's one nice thing about the Schlage B252, most high security lock manufacturers still make a cylinder
to fit it. You can change out the original cylinder for another better one by removing one screw. If you want
to stick with Schlage, you can get an Everest or Primus cylinder (need two, one inside & one outside)

IMO the B252 is overpriced and prone to a lot of issues. We now never use them unless the customer really wants them, we are instead specifying Grade 1 LSDA (Schlage D line institutional knockoff). We almost never have an issue. Marks and arrow gate locks are also better, but harder to find.

However since you went with the Schlage, one thing you can do is replace the tailpieces with a different tailpiece that isn't prone to falling out. It isn't a bad lock, just expensive and has a couple of well-known issues.

Thank you Jim @cledry thank you @billdeserthills

I paid about $150 for the Schlage...not sure if it can be returned, maybe I can use it elsewhere if I decide to swap it out later

I am going to read into these other options

Most (if not all) the higher security cylinders that do fit into the Schlage B252 have
fixed the tailpiece problem Schlage has been known for--At any rate, I almost never have
any problem with the tailpieces falling out because the 'E' series latch used on the B252
is very solid and won't move, like the deadbolt latch can when used with a double cylinder
deadbolt--That is the real culprit behind the tailpieces falling out...

To increase Security with the Schlage, you could have it repined with Spool, Mushroom or other Security pins, Don't leave keys out to where someone can see the cuts, and if you have Numbers on the keys, Make Copies, and carry the one with No Numbers on it. Later

Good evening

Happy holidays and a new year to all who observe it.

The gate hardware is largely installed, we opted for a Liftmaster LA 400 system with one arm on each leaf/gate, i.e. the vehicle gate has 2 leafs, each with one liftmaster arm.

It seems that the liftmaster arm can be disconnected simply by removing this hitch pin and removing the bolt - images for viewing below.

I was informed by the installer that a better option would be to either

a) Replace the bolt and hitch pin with a 1/2 inch hitch lock

b) weld the piece connected to the plate so remove the bolt and hitch pin all together and weld the plate to the clasps, of course this would mean it would require grinding down the weld if the arm needs to be changed

My question to you is whether there are some good quality hitch locks that you recommend? Or alternatively some other mechanism to secure the arm.
