Earlier today I made a pick out of .018" Starrett steel stock. I think this is the first standard hook I've made, all my previous picks have been either flags or for sidebars. Just now I opened this padlock with the homemade pick. I'm pretty happy with the quality of the steel and will probably be ordering more stock in various thicknesses.

Nice conformation on your hook, GGL. Looks really good, and well polished. :D You will probably find yourself using it quite a bit.

Every picker is different, and custom making your own picks can be fun and rewarding as you get the pick just the way you want it. Have many factory made picks, but the ones I use the most are Bogota picks that Raimundo made and a hook and diamond pick that I made. For dimple locks, have found nothing better than the pick Femurat made for me.

Do you make your own tension wrenches yet?

The only ones I have made have been lock specific tension wrenches where nothing else I had could fit. Most are funky one offs. I also tried making a prybar style wrench for the M3 keyway but that didn't turn out as well as I hoped. I would like to someday make some prybars in between .06-.1" thicknesses.

A few weeks ago you mentioned you made a tension tool with two wires for the Vachette AXI. I received an AXI Home a couple days ago and I'm currently trying to make a tensioner for that keyway. I marked the spaces and it's ready for the Dremel but I gotta wait a few hours so I don't wake up the neighbors.

The black parts would be cut out and the middle section would span diagonally across the keyway. I'm not sure how much space will be left will be left for picking so I might cut out the very center which would leave two prongs, one on each outer edge of the keyway.

The tensioner only needs one wire. It looks like this:

It fits in the keyway like so:

You can stick a hook pick in the hole in the middle and use the corners of the triangular keyway to hold the back of your pick steady while you pick the pins on the flats of the triangles.

Is your Vachette AXI Home a cutaway?

Aww that makes much more sense than what I thought you did. For some reason I thought you used two 90 degree bent wires with some sort of spacer in between them. I like how yours works, it is probably easier on the keyway compared to what I made. I'm afraid my tensioner may deform the keyway if too heavy tension is applied or for too long.

Anyway this is what my tool looks like now. It fits well and there should be enough space to work with. I'll being trying to pick the lock tonight. If I can't get it to work I'll try making a tool like yours.

And no my AXI is not a cutaway. Your's is much cooler and I hear one of a kind as well.

The tension should be very light in order to pick the lock. Heavy tension will bind the pins too tightly. There are also spool pins.

Picked a Best SFIC, “A” keyway, to the control shearline! Wasn’t as difficult as people make it out to be.

Today I got two Medecos and the CISA SP picked. The first Medeco took only about 10 minutes and the other closer to 30. They were both only 5 pin locks. I've been pecking at the SP the last few days and tonight when I tried using heavy tension it fell open quickly. The SP I picked like a dimple lock using a small .015" flag that I made specifically for it's keyway.
