Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Victor safe assistance

Postby Caretaker1059 » 3 Jan 2018 20:07

Greetings
I have searched the forum and found much good information. I have a Victor safe . Locked closed of course . It says st Louis world's fair 1904 grand prize on the front .
Any info on the lock mechanism would be appreciated. I have been given several possible combinations of 3 numbers each then it says return to zero to open . Tried them all in different sequence 4-3-2-1. 3-2-1 etc. I have been reading about charting but do not know if this method applies to this lock. Thanks in advance for any help Tim

Hi,
Sounds like a nice safe you got there.

A photo of the front of the whole safe and a closer pic of the handle and dial (or just dial if its a dial handle combo) would help us identify the model lock used on your safe, could you upload pics to tinypic or imgur or some hosting site and Paste the links here so we can have a look?

Thank you,
Squelchtone

The lock you have is more likely than not to be a Yale L2 or a Yale L1. Opening sequence is 4321 to stop. LRLR. These locks have 3 wheels plus a driver. The only Victor's with 2 wheels plus a driver are the small cast iron ones (12" to 16" high). The Yale L1 and L2 do not return to 0 to open.

Ok

Tried all with dialing sequence provided.
Also tried all with sequence of LRLR to 0 as drop in and left to pull bolts.
No luck on any.
What do you recommend as next step
Thanks

Caretaker1059:

2 questions.

1. the combinations you were given to try out, are they written on paperwork that was found on the property and are *probably* the actual combination or are they just some numbers or educate guesses someone came up with based on past owners date of birth or address or phone number? or are they factory default try out combinations someone found on google?

2. When you dial using the 4321 method, are you pretty well versed in doing this, as in, have you opened other more modern safes where you have to dial 4 times around to the Left to the first number, then 3 times around Right to the 2nd number and so on? Half the trouble on old safes is knowing the actual procedure to enter the combination.

is this how you're dialing?

4 times left to xx
3 times right to xx
2 times left to xx
1 time right to stop

(forget the dialing to 0 part (for now at least))

Thanks

Greetings
1.They were combinations given by the previous owner to the the owner that I purchased the safe from.
I have also tried the factory tryout combinations as well. No luck

2. Yes I have a safe that uses this exact dialing procedure last turn until stop then pull the lever.

So should I assume that this safe will "stop" on the last turn when then bar drops in if the wheels are in line?
Thanks Again for all the help
Tim
Ps the safe has been through 3 owners plus myself without being opened so I am hoping that there is not some mechanical issue inside
