Making Titanium lock picks

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

What is better Grade 2 or Grade 5?

Making Titanium lock picks

Postby rsvelazquez87 » 12 Jul 2016 16:50

I was considering fabricating some Ti lock picks. I am not familiar with Ti, like I am with tool steel. Could anyone tell me what grade of Ti would be best? I am currently prepared to make .018, .020 and .025 (.015 was to expensive and .016 was to much material). I was looking in buy the "Grade 5" sheets, is this type of Ti to vulnerable to breaking since it is a lot more rigid than the "Grade 2"? I have read that the Ti picks for sale are made from "aerospace grade titanium," which infers "Grade 5." Could you guys tell me what you all think?

Thanks everyone.

Grade 2 is basically pure Ti and way too soft to make picks from. Grade 5 would be a much better choice but it depends on how you intend on making the picks. Grade 5 work hardens and becomes brittle very easily, so using a bench grinder is out. Laser will also probably cause some problems as well, but water jet or EDM will probably be your best bet. Just out of interest, why do you want to use any form of Titanium? Steels are cheaper, stronger and easier to shape. Theres a reason all good picks are made from 301 full had or extra hard :/ The only advantage i can see is the ability to anodize the material for looks.

Grade 5 is probably what your looking for. grade 2 is much softer.

Stainless steel still seems like a better choice to me.

This might help narrow it down, if you have to have Titanium.

I spoke to a very reputable source in the lock pick making industry and they said Grade 5 as well.

It sounds like it'd be more cost effective to purchase Titanium picks, unless you are already a machinist. Still sounds like a sexy project, but not for a normal joe, like me.

Please share pictures and details if this project proceeds!

A few days ago I received a couple .025" grade 5 Titanium sheets. Each sheet was 18.5"x 2.5" and cost about $11 a piece. I made a single pick out of the Ti yesterday and found it to be much harder to work with when compared to steel. It took an entire Dremel cutting disc to cut out the square of material for the pick. After that I used an bench grinder to remove the excess which went fairly quickly. I did the shaping using a Dremel 9903 bit which worked, but much much slower than steel. The final shaping was done with needle files which was also slow. I found that the material likes to "curl" on the edges when using either the grinder, 9903 bit, or a file. To remove the curl on the edges I used 120 grit sandpaper. All in all the process is pretty much the same as making a steel pick but takes maybe 5x as long and is harder on your tools.

The pick is strong and stiff like a standard steel pick but due to the amount of time and being rough on my tools I don't think I'll be making any more picks out of TI anytime soon.

I hope you wore a good dust mask, Ti is incredibly bad for you to breathe in when grinding. I have made a few over the years out of Ti, it is an interesting material to machine (which is one reason you don’t see more use of it for picks)
