Guard brand combination padlock question

Postby mrgreenjeans » 14 Jan 2018 18:44

I recently received a standard combination lock, with the word Guard written on the front, and nothing written on the back, or any other part of the lock. It looks just like a stanard MasterLock combination lock but I can't figure out how to unlock it. When I try it the unusual way, by applying unpward pressure to the shackle, the face turns just as easy as it would if no pressure were being applied. In other reason the standard way of unlocking it doesns't seem to work. Shimmiming doesn't seem to work either. Any ideas? Normally, when upward pressure is exerted on the shackle, the face becomes hard to turn until it becomes impossible to turn, giving you the first number (plus 5, of course), etc., etc., but this lock seems to turn just fine even when the pressure is applied to it. Can you help he open this lock without demage it it? I would greatly appreciate it!!!!! This is a matter of great urgency!!

Thank You!!!

Gene Kent

why is this so urgent ? I have a couple a guard combo lock and has experienced none of these issues, also your description of decoding the lock seems a bit odd. as I understand it you work the dial to decode the LAST number of the combo not the first. A pic would be greatly appreciated

So you received a Guard brand combination padlock and it is locked but it is not being used on anything and opening this lock is an urgent matter?

Why not just cut it off, its not like an antique or museum piece. Buy another one for $10 bucks to replace it and the new one will include the combination.

Let's see a photo of your lock.

Im also moving this thread since decoding combination lock is not beginner level lock picking.

I love this point in the conversation .. When the OP is asked for a picture, and they are never heard from again
When I finally leave this world.. Will someone please tell my wife what I have REALLY spent on locks ...

To be fair they logged off after posting that and have not been back. Can't be that urgent unless that's a trick they've learned to do on forum to elicit replies faster.

Oh well back to enjoying some Sunday couch time!

Re: Guard brand combination padlock question

So i couldn't leave well enough alone, this post got me thinking about a guard brand combo lock i was gifted with no combo. So last night I went about decoding the lock, and to my surprise it was quite different than the standard master combo locks I have decoded.

First, when applying tension to the shackle I could only find one "point" that "binded" (apologies in advance if I am not using the correct terms, criticism appreciated ) all the way around the dial, the dial would always bind hard at between 9 and 11. Doubting my findings I picked up a master combo lock and found that, in comparison I could feel multiple points binding around the dial. With renewed confidence I went back to the guard combo lock and began the process again. Exact same result : only binding between 9 and 11 no matter how much/or little upward tension was applied, leaving me to guess the last # is indeed 10.

I was in the process of working through possible combos that end in 10, when I realized i was late for work. I will continue to work the possible combos and hopefully get an open. I am confused at to why i can only feel one point binding in this lock, but its the only thing I have to go off of at this point. Any help or advice would be appreciated

UPDATE: 10 does not appear to be the last number.
