Trying to improve my picking skills

Postby AlwaysLearningDavid » 15 Jan 2018 11:24

Hey all,

I'm trying to work on improving my picking skills. I'm fairly good at most residential locks and seldom take more than a couple minutes for sc1's and kw1's.

But I want to get past the next plateau and really get to picking and not just fumbling with the pins. You know, actually push each pin individually, be able to detect and beat security pins, and work on some tight tolerances.

I went ahead and pulled an USCAN SC4 commercial lever lock from my van that was missing it's keys and have been messing with it for practice.

Man, this lock is just straight up kicking my butt.

I wanted to give bump keys a try and with about 1000 attempts I got it open exactly once.

Picking has also been brutal.

I count 6 pins and their order of indication goes 3-1-2-5-6 (bow to tip).

The big problem I'm running into is that the 1st through 3rd pins are jamming regardless of how much pressure I'm giving it and they all over pick when I get them to move.

I also blasted it with some Tri-Flo, but the pins are hanging just the same.

Any suggestions about how I can avoid them shooting in too deep?

I suggest you don't bump a lock that you want to pick. Bumping ruins the pins and chambers and makes the lock bad for picking practice. Specially if you bump it a thousand times.

Find another lock and you'll see the difference.

Cheers :)

Yeah, the sheer amount of bumping has made the cylinder face mighty ugly. I imagine the pins can't be much better.
