Steamer Trunk from Langmuir Luggage

Postby skystride » 30 Jan 2018 23:37

Hello everyone,

I bought a trunk from a thrift store that has no key. Any suggestion on how I might attempt to open the lock? The lock has 2 holes with 2 vertical slots (see images). The lock is spinning freely and I tried randomly poking/rattling the holes with 2 stiff wires bent to different shapes but having no luck. I assume the lock opens when the keyhole is horizontal? I'm basing this on a youtube video I saw of a similar trunk but different lock shape.

Any help would be much appreciated! It seems like it is empty but I would like to use as storage. I guess the last option is to drill the rivets?

Thanks!

Hi,

Are you handy with sheet metal, feeler gauges, and a file, Dremel, and hand tools?

You could try making a key based on this picture: (the cuts of this key may not match whats going on inside your lock, but you may get lucky.

you can also reach out to this place and see if they have keys in stock:

if all that fails, yeah, probably drill rivets, but then you wont have a cool lock on your trunk. Maybe bring it to a local locksmith shop and see if they'll pick it and make you a key for a reasonable fee.

I Googled Langmuir Luggage it is made in Canada, there appears to be a number of it still around, I would check with Antique shops you might get lucky and find a similar trunk with same type of lock & keys.

Good Luck !!
