What kind of key is this?

Postby Stonebreaker » 30 Jan 2018 17:27

According to the person that I bought it from many years ago, this is some type of key. Can anyone tell me what kind it is and what it's for?

Curious to see if it actually is a key. I have a strange little lock that has 2 pieces similar to the end of that and can be defeated by folding over a wiper blade or other suitable material and it pushes on 2 releases. Interesting though

Sounds possible, no luck yet finding a similar item on the web. Thanks for the reply.

Could be, though it would have to be a very large lock, I have a similar trunk lock and the key is much smaller than this one. Thanks

I sent the photos to a few tool collectors and one of them replied with the answer. Turns out that it's a key for a watchman's clock. When the watchman was making his rounds, he would use these keys that were found at the watchman's stations, and insert them into his watchclock, which would make a record of the time he was at each station, proving that he actually kept watch. Once I knew what it was I was able to find the patent for it:

If I look inside the slot of this key, I can see the number 16 on each side, one convex and one concave, see number 35 and 36 in Fig. 1 above. These numbers would leave an impression on a record disk (number 33 in Fig. 3) in the watchclock.

Good work Stonebreaker, Looked intricate for just a key? Not saying Keys can't be.
