Allow me to introduce **THE ART OF FREESAFEING **

Postby Punkty24 » 3 Feb 2018 10:28

EVERY now and then, there is something that pops up on one of these kinds of boards that seem, upon first glance, to be frivolous, childish, and maybe even a little bit silly.

I can confirm that this is one of those posts; however, I can also assure you all that I have personally found it to be remarkably rewarding, enjoyable, and also at times frustrating and rage-inducingly tricky, hence me now producing it here and introducing any and all willing participants to my new hobby-branch of Locksport:

**THE ART OF FREESAFEING **

The idea basically is that of taking a container, object, box, bowl, dish, saucepan, junction box or old pedal bin, basically ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that you are able to get your hands on that was NOT meant to be a safe, and making a safe (to any extent, from just mounting a safe lock to it, through to making a custom boltwork setup and arrangement for it) from that object.

Sound easy?

Ohhh yes it does....

IS it easy??

Noooot somuch....

Guys, I am BEGGING you all, even if its just the once, and just to prove that I am wrong and an idiot, that its no fun at all and really not that hard, I am BEGGING you to please, all at least try it the once, I have a strong suspicion it may well catch on...

If nothing else, the experience will aid in the skills required to get the more unusual, quirky and unique jobs done in the future, improve your adaptability, that sort of thing...

FREESAFEING projects to get the imaginitive and creative juices flowing...

Alright. 4 things..

1 very creative, I like where your heads at. I also day dream about putting safe dials on cabinets at work but never actually commit to doing it.

2. This topic shouldn't be posted in Ask Beginner Hobby Lockpicking, lets at least put it somewhere like General Chatter or This Old Safe.

3 you probably dont realize it but you're uploading pics to imgur for the entire imgur community to see and comment on, you can keep your imgur pics private and still share them with the forum but not with all the snarky a $$holes who comment on peoples picture over at ingur. So dont click Share with Community after you upload a pic to imgur.

4. Your camera lens needs cleaning or something, some of the pics are very blurry. Is this taken with old equipment or just a smudged lens?

Looking forward to seeing peoples projects!

Sorry for the quality of the images, I am having to use the beat-up-worse-than-for-my-dinner-money Alcatel Pixi camera, which doesn't like the light, doesn't like the dark and really doesn't like anything in between either unfortunately...

As for the Imgur options, I have never been given any sort of 'sharing' option when uploading...??

Also sorry for misplacing the post-i never can ssem to get it right...

A progress report on the art of FREESAFEING...

Postby Punkty24 » 2 Jul 2018 5:16

<iframe class='imgur-album' width='100%' height='550' frameborder='0' src='http://imgur.com/a/fG719P4/embed'></iframe>

[EDIT: We dont support HTML in the forum's phpbb code, please just copy in the URL: http://imgur.com/a/fG719P4/ [/EDIT]

So hopefully there should be a link to an album that shows how honestly quick easy and simple you really CAN make Freesafeing-absolutely anybody can do this, guys, and the finished product is (in this example -), a FUNCTIONAL, USEFUL and PRACTICAL portable mobile personal safe that is actually surprisingly spacious and accommodating, all things considered...

The safe began its life as the enclosure for a shop roller shutter control equipment, and as I have already publicised, the basic, speedy, all-inclusively engaging and ultimately REWARDING outcome of the experience has (I honestly believe -) the potential or possibility to be getting more people interested and engaged in the locksport community.

sorry man, but I dont get it, and it may have to do with needing a lot more coffee this morning.. you seem super exicted about this, and I'm trying to be excited as well because I like crafty projets, so I must be missing something very basic but it looks like you just took an existing lockbox and just called it a home made safe.... like I understand it probably had a switch in there that would open or close a shutter and you just took the switch out and now you have a container for ... umm cash, weed, etc.. is this what freesafing is?

I thought we were going to put Sargent & Greenleaf 6730 safe locks on things like desk drawers or perhaps on a steel ammunition can lid.

Help me understand this a little better please, thank you

Yes, that's the aimgoaltargetdestinationandmoneyshot, and the next one of my updates on the topic is my adaptation of a 400V industrial mains electric shut off twist switch to a safe, and I am USING that meaty twist onoff switch to actually retract the bolt on said safe.

I have the suspicion that, should someone new to safe locks, and locksport in general, TRY to attempt THAT project straight off the bat,it would be more likely to drive the incoming tide of interest to other paths (it's been vexing the gonads offv ME at times tbh lol), so I am just putting the ideas inspirations challenges and possibilities for this out there to people, maybe to get their KIDS involved, or maybe take it into a care home or engage with kids with learning difficulties and INCLUDE people who may not always BE included in the hobby, and hopefully will allow ANYBODY else to get the same kind of enjoyment and satisfaction from the pasttime as I do.

The best comparison i can think of is that of the hobby of table top wargaming and modelling - there are some fantastic artists out there who have the ability to paint and render some truly amazing works of art, essentially, but it is going to be a bit disheartening to the newcomer to be getting more amateurish results in their painting efforts.
The portable mini safe is a token, (hopefully -) an inspiration, and a constant reminder to its owner of the POSSIBILITIES and a link to the hobby and community....

In the meantime, I am working on MY own work of art in the hope that maybe I can do what the talented artists do in the modelling world - provide an inspiration or target or challenge for the newcomer to BETTER and beat, does ANY of that make any sense,or...? I am shit at communication at times sorry lol
