Ingersoll Shackle Pin Removal

Gday Guys,

Recently I acquired another Ingersoll padlock, rather cheap, but still in reasonable condition.



Polished up nice, but due to rust / corrosion, the shackle retaining pin, which by design should be loose in the shackle, is stuck and I cant remove it. So far, I have tried soaking it in solvent and then CRC for a few days, and hammering it out with a pin punch, but it didnt move. I have also tried drilling it with a HSS drillbit, but I'm guessing its hardened as the drillbit barely left a scratch. Im thinking the next step is to get a harder colbalt or carbide drillbit and trying again. My question is, is this the best course of action, or is there another way to free this pin up?

For those that dont know, the pin is accessed through the hole a third of the way up the lock at the bottom of the below picture. I need to remove the shackle so I can remove the other retaining screw and remove the core.

Have you tried heating it? Usually heating a piece like a stuck bolt with a torch helps loosening it. Be careful not to burn it

No need to heat it. Use a roll pin punch, or straight punch just slightly smaller in diameter than the hole. Slide the shackle up until the roll pin is in line with the hole, then drive it further into the shackle, maybe far enough to fall out of the shackle (don't fully remember). Once it is far enough in, the shackle can be removed.

I would try PB Blaster Penetrating oil, I feel it is best for seized, rusted parts. Good Luck.

Unfortunately Gordon, the pin is wider in diameter than the shackle, ie it protudes on both sides. There was still a bit of room for me to move the pin inside the body though, so I did attempt to free it up by driving it with a pin punch, but its so stuck that it started to mushroom instead of moving.

My understanding is that the retaining pin is meant to be close to, but not quite the ID of its hole in the shackle. The pin is a similar width to its bore inside the body which prevents it from falling out in normal use, but when the shackle is moved into the right position and aligned with the hole, you can shake it loose and remove it.

Guess I'm back to drilling?

No, Squelchy, I can't. I've tried from my home ADSL, from my work LAN (that is usually very fast), and from my 4G mobile.
I've tried different browsers and different PC's. I've never been able to see a single picture from that website. I get errors like ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE or the error above.
Maybe Italy, or Europe, isn't a supported nation for that hosting provider?

Gday femurat,

Got a PM from Squelchtone in regards to the domain not working from your part of the world. I took a look this morning and confirmed the block of Italy by using a VPN. Looking at the domain I found some misconfigured security software, and after fixing it, the VPN started working for me, so hopefully all Italian IPs will now work.

Have a try now, and if the problem persists, hit me with a PM and Ill see what else I can do.
