Are those bicycle U lock easy to pick?

Postby Shohreh » 16 Feb 2018 7:40

Hello,

I own those three U locks that are supposed to be pretty secure, and was wondering how easy their locks are to pick by professionals:

I don't know about the other two, but the Knog Strongman has a "High security disc style lock barrel with over 5000 unique key variations".

One day while we were at the movies, a friend got her (expensive) Brompton bike stolen that was locked on the street with a Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit to a solid fence. Since employees standing a few feet from there heard nothing, an angle grinder seems unlikely, so I suspect the lock was picked. Hence my wondering about how secure bike U locks really are.

Thank you.

I wouldn't say easy as in walking up the lock sticking a pick in like they do in the movies and riding off on the bike 20 seconds later. More like 5 to 10 minutes with a special tool, but that's based on my knowledge and bad guys always know more and share tricks with each other that more often than not bust the lock open, instead of using skill to actually pick it.

That style of lock doesn't work with normal lock picks, you need to make or buy a special tool. We normally don't discuss bike lock picking since we dont want to educate bad guys but since this video is already on youtube, take a look at how one of our members opens one of the locks you mentioned, you can decide for yourself if it is "easy"

Hope this helps,
