How to dismantle code padlock?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

How to dismantle code padlock?

Postby tiirikkapete » 8 Mar 2018 6:23

Hi. I need to change a brass code padlock system and it requires disassembling of the lock. How do I proceed? It looks that there's just a plug which must be removed to get the shackle out. It has probably thrown in with force. Is it possible and can I remove the plug by using nut pliers or similar? The lock must be assembled again to working condition. I have very good tools.

To change the combination of these padlocks you don't need any tool. Set the old combination, open the shackle and turn it 180 degrees, press it down, dial the new combination, lift the shackle again.

Cheers :)

Sure I know how to change the code. I need to cange the system itself so that tumblers can open the lock in more than one combination.

This doesn't sound like a profitable job, I never heard of having a combo padlock with two different combos
just make it a dual custody thing and lock a second combo padlock to the other, then you can have two different combos

I am a magician and want to make a lock having certain special function. That's the reason for dismantling it. If you know where to buy unassembled locks, I would be very interested in.

I am actually surprised that people haven't dissassembled these locks just to see inside. All other type of locks are torn down.

In the long ago I did drill out the retainer on an older CCL Sesamee combo padlock or two,
I even put them back together, but I wouldn't bother doing it again. Most inexpensive padlocks are designed to not come apart,
or at least not to go back together after they are taken apart

The Sesamee was different as it has never been an 'inexpensive' padlock

I managed to disassemble the lock very easily by using knife blade and just lifting the plug up. Then the shank could be removed. Unfortunately this lock is "too simple" for my purposes. It can't be modified to be opened by more than one combination. If I file off one tumbler, the wheel comes completely inactive and that's not the idea I have in my mind. Actually I just discovered how this is easy to do. Off course I should have known this without tampering the lock because I have 50 yrs of experience in locks and maintenance. But I have been doing only Abloys which are slightly different. :D

That's interesting. May I see a picture of a tumbler from the top?

Thanks :)

Houdini (or his assistant) took padlocks to Charles Cortney a NY locksmith to remove all but one tumblers. Audience submitted padlocks to be picked and his assistant would swap them for the 'downgraded' padlocks which he picked in front of the audience. Padlocks were returned to owners closed. Charles submitted a padlock he had riveted shut and Houdini somehow managed to 'pick' it and replace the rivet.

This was very interesting to hear as I like Houdini. Houdini used gimmicked locks but he really was good in picking the locks and he knew them really well. Houdini used to sit in Courtney's shop all afternoon, chatting and picking locks as a hoppy.

Thanks for the picture. The slots look all the same to me. I thought one of them (the correct number) had a larger slot.
I guess the correct number is determined by the small tumblers around the shackle.
Unfortunately I don't have one of these padlocks so I can't help much with your project.

Can you enlarge one slot behind a number so it always open the lock?

Cheers :)

The other part of each dial is what is doing the unlocking. That's the bit with the gate, the slots on the dials are only to mesh with a pin on that part.

I think you want to add a 2nd gate to that portion so that your 2nd number will open the lock. The problem from a gimmick standpoint is that when the audience member changes the combo to their number that you "don't know" is that they've changed the relation of the number dial to the gates, so you'd have (2) unknown combinations.

You'd do better to add in a simple bypass to the lock - let the audience member change the combo all they want, but if you use a steel catch for the hasp and a very light spring you could rap or magnet open the lock while it's still "locked" by the combination.
