Old Wooden Cabinet of Unknown Origin

Postby stefanie » 25 Feb 2018 14:16

Hey y'all,

My mom has this wooden cabinet that we can't get open. I think she may have tried to force it. I don't know anything about locks so anything you can offer about how to open it is much appreciated. All I know about the cabinet is that it used to hold vinyl records. I've posted a few images.

Thanks in advance!

Gday stefanie,

Now by all means I am no pro here, but I'm going to go out on a limb, I'm sure I will be corrected swiftly if I am wrong ;) The lock you have is a Lever Lock of some sort. In theory, all lever locks should actually have some levers in them to match the key, but looking at your picture, there dosent appear to be a lot of room for them, so it may not. This is / was suprisingly common on cheaper locks, and means that you only need to throw the bolt, rather than actually pick anything. I would make a tool out of coathanger wire that was 'L' shaped like the key would have been, with the end of the 'L' the same size as the lock hole. Insert you new key / bolt-thrower and try turning it, making sure that the entire L end is inside the metal part of the lock.

Your 'key' should look something like one of these.

See how you go with the above, if you don't have any success, the lock may indeed have some levers and require to be picked. If thats the case, the best thing you can do is take it to your local locksmith for opening, lest you damage the lock further.

Best of luck,

No drama stefanie,

Your local locksmith should be able to open it without much trouble I would imagine. You should see your LP's again soon!

We ended up removing the top and taking the doors off their hinges lol. It actually looks really nice open like that too so we're leaving it. Thanks anyway!

This reply is of no help and off topic so I am sorry for that.

But your photo of the lock is pretty awesome. Composition is good, the colors and the blur are also awesome. What did you take it with?

just fyi, you're replying to a member of the public who stopped by on Feb 25th to ask a question and then hasnt logged back in since Feb 27th. They're not a hobbyist, so they probably wont be back to reply to your question, unless they subscribed to get emails any time someone replies to this thread.
