McCaskey

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Well here I might go again.... (background: i like collecting old things that strike my fancy)

The STAR AMSEC project got quite enveloped into safes, particularly old ones, and so I was just researching and looking.
I came across a beaten, bruised, rusted up, lock not functioning McCaskey Register Safe
hhmm, I hadn't heard about this company, time to star digging a new rabbit hole!!!

Image

Ive found that this was actual the first patented cash register company started in 1903
The only information i can find about the company making the Fireproof Register Safe is that they started making them in 1914,
After a spontaneous combustion ignited the varnish and destroyed and large amount of wooden registers.
They were eventually bought out by Victor Adding Machine CO in 1953

I have determined the name painted on there to be DR G.S. Duntley who achieved an assistant pharmacist lisence in 1900 and basically pioneered the adenoidectomy. Hes published in a few journals and lived in Illinois.

What id like to ask is if anyone has more information regarding McCaskey and the safes that they made, pictures would be great. I can only find one other picture of a McCaskey safe. I want the picture in order for an artist to redo the paint.

Which brings me to my other question, this guy wants 200 dollars for something he has been using as yard art next to the beach, what id like to do is lightly blast and remove old paint/rust and refurbish the best i can to original. The owner states that the door swings open and closes but will not lock. Id also like to ask what the chance are of being able to refurbish the hopefully original lock system inside.
I feel like 50 bucks should be good to offer considering condition, location, my intended use versus his, and the amount it would cost to refurb. Do not want to be a snob, but tend to over pay many of the times I find my "collectibles"

What do y'all think
Please and Thank you

not worth it unless you figure out what lock and dial actually belong on that safe door. That new 6730 S&G dial ring is new compared to the antique safe body.

I had a feeling about that, plus it looks upside down.

I actually found the doctors personal 12kt gold bifocals that sold on ebay in 2013 for $15.
But I don't think I'd be able to locate the lock that belongs to that safe!
I cant even find much besides a statement that the company made these larger safes. They were best know for the registers and register safe which looked like a over sized lunch box.

Thanks for answering!

Does the handle turn to extend the bolts?

Just when you finally think you have learned it all, that is when you learn that you don't know anything yet.
