Lock picked, cylinder turns, door still locked!

Postby Weaselleaf » 7 May 2018 21:29

I have become fairly proficient at multiple practice locks and varlious masterlocks so i decided to attempt to pick my front door lock (kwikset basic lock). I was able to pick with relative easy using a bogata. The cylinder turns completely however the door is still locked. The inside locking knob remains in the locked position, doesnt turn upon successful pick/cylinder turn. tried opposiste direcion with no luck. what am i missing???

Thanks in advance!!

You are missing our first rules of locksport - Don't pick locks that are not yours (which this one may well be yours), and the one that applies to this situation - Don't pick locks in use. If the lock fails, as yours has, then you either don't have a way to get in, or can't secure your premises while you go get another lock.

My guess is that you knocked off the tailpiece from the lock.

[EDIT: disregard what I said, I missed that your lock is a Kwikset. Is it a knob or a deabdolt? post a photo of the lock "picked" ]

a photo of your lock cylinder as well as where you are will help us a lot. Different lock mechanisms are popular in different countries and we have members here from all over the world.

Here is a helpful page explaing european profile cylinders https://unitedlocksmith.net/blog/everyt ... nder-locks their rotating cams sometimes behave the way your lock is behaving. is this the sort of cylinder you have?

Kwikset. Do they even make a profile lock?

Thanks for the quick responses!
I live in Florida. It’s the handle/knob lock, not the dead bolt.
I believe it’s the most basic (aka cheapest) Kwikset. I’m out of town for work but I can post a pic when I get home this weekend.
I wasn’t very clear in describing, sorry. I don’t believe anything was broken, the lock seems to function the same and it still works fine with the with the key.
I had the door physically open but locked during picking. Once picked, I simply got cylinder rotation, not just a little, but the cylinder was turning with ease, using my tension wrench. I thought at that point my door knob should turn and the lock mechanism should retract as I was turning. Im pretty sure I didn’t turn the cylinder completely/far enough and that’s why the knob wouldn’t turn and why the locking mechanism didn’t retract. I’m sure it’s due to by “noobness” and me not understanding what’s suppose to happen, when!

Thanks again

gweiens,
I read the rules of this forums site but you are right, I don’t know any of the rules for fight club, I mean locksport club much less the 1st rule. Thank for sharing. Could you, post the rest of the rules plz:)
I did a poor job of describing in my original post.
I do know the lock is definately mine, I own it and the house attached to it. I am thankful I didn’t break anything or have to leave premises unsecured. Actually that’s not true. I am lucky to live in an area of Florida (panhandle) that I never have to secure premises. My doors and windows are wide open always. Leave keys in 4wheeler and boat too! It may be the last place in Florida you can leave doors unlocked all week while out of town and know that everything’s safe. I’m sure change is coming as it seems everybody wants to “progress” and “expand” our community. The up side of this will be I can actually use my locks!lol
