HPC Ball Pick Variation

This picture was posted on a FB page with a question about the bottom pick. Is this a variation of the ball or just a misstamped pick .. Anyone have an insight .. The OP thought he remembered something about it being an improvement on the ball pick

The changed area looks hand filed. The edge texture of the narrower section does not match the rest of the pick. Can't imagine a mis-stamped part being that consistent on all but that narrow section.

Agreed, that's not a factory defect, that is someones 'handiwork'.
