How to remove door from Chubb safe

Postby Relic » 6 Jun 2018 18:20

Hello,

Standing in front of a free drop safe! Contractor doing a reno in an old bank said I can have the door. Door is open, it has two four number combo dials and a timer. The hinges are captive and I don't know how to get door off. There are no bolts holding hinge brackets. Bottom bracket had a bolt in line with pin to make door swing easier. Top bracket had a spring loaded ball bearing for lubrication.

Anybody know what I am talking about? If I can't get door off I will just remove the locks and timer...

I checked all hinge bracket surfaces for set screws that might allow the hinge pin to move, no luck. I knew posting here would be a long shot, the right person would have to be o line at this exact time.

Going to start dismantling the door now.

posting in Ask Beginner Hobby Lockpicking Questions isnt helping either.. perhaps This Old Safe would a better sub forum.. I know you dont post often but please take a look at all the new sub forums, we are working hard to keep things organized. I'll move this thread there.

also, without pics your question is a lot harder to answer. Is this a walk in vault door that weighs 4 tons? that's what I'm imagining.

looking forward to your pics

I think I used the wrong words to describe the safe, it is a night deposit safe.
The bottom door is pictured.

There is a date on one of the lock bolts 1986, Chubb.

Still would like to know how to get door off, more of a curiosity now. The contractor is scrapping it tomorrow.

very nice job removing everything, glad you took that first pic for later in case you get the door off.

I asked 3 Twitter friends if the door can be removed or if it is not intended to ever be removed, let's see if they reply soon.

You wouldn't happen to have a photo of the outside of the door with the hinges in sight would you?

Thank you,

I think he's got the type where the hinge pins go up and down, trapping the door between the safe box hinge mounts kind of like this:

Yes, the hinges look like the other safe you posted except... The pins are not visible. I scratched the paint off all surfaces of the hinge and there we no seams caps or weld marks. On the top hinge bracket that is welded to safe body there was an oiler that I drilled out to see if there might be an internal thread in the pin that I could thread into and pull pin up. No luck. Did the same on bottom where door float bolt was, nothing there either. If you look at my first picture there are large bolts around the perimeter, I think they are holding the entire locking mechanism into the outer 4" think door. They must have bonded the lock mech plat to the outer door because even with slamming the door it would not budge. I suspect that behind the lock mech plate will be bolts holding the hinge on. Drove by the site today and they haven't hauled it for scrap yet. Might need heat to get the bond to break.

Anybody know for sure?

Too bad you can't get Whole Safe, Contractor says you can have door? Is he scrapping rest for Steel Price. Bet you could pay a little better than scrap. If you wanted and able to move? Would be nice to put back together. Good Luck

Is the top pin being pushed up by a spring? You might have a small access hole to push down on a spring. Are you sure there aren't flush fitting caps on the hinge blocks. Lastly an angle grinder with cut off wheel will remove it.
