what's the point in locking up the bike? I thought insurance covers theft. Mine does at least, but I'm not sure what the deductible is or what the total coverage is.

If you enjoy walking to work I guess there is little need for locking up your bike

It is a serious question but now I realize it's a quite a ignorant one. I go to college in California and own a $700 scooter and don't use a brake lock because of the hassle. maybe not locking up my bike is a mistake that I will pay for it later. Or maybe the area, Santa Barbara, is safe enough to rely on the crappy lock cylinder to deter thieves from my crappy scooter.

If I had a 5 or $10,000 bike, then I would probably take security more seriously. I'm just pretty lazy and pay for a security system that would takes the least amount of work to engage.

one thought is that if someone wants to steal your bike, it's going to get stolen, but security probably stop novice thieves.

First, if the insurance company can prove that the loss was preventable or due to negligence on your part (e.g. not sufficiently protecting your property), they have grounds to deny your claim. In certain areas (I think all/most of Europe operates this way, but one of the members here from across the pond can correct me if I'm wrong) there's a concept of an insurance grade lock, and if you don't use one of at least that quality/security level they won't cover your loss. Further, if you file multiple claims for loss in a small enough time frame, they may label you higher risk and raise your rates. Finally, please keep in mind that insurance is not just free money that falls off trees, it's about shared risk. The cost to cover your loss is coming from somewhere: specifically, all the rest of the insurance carrying public. We're all paying to cover that payout, so perhaps being a bit less frivolous about it would be the decent thing to do. Don't be That Guy.
