Opening a floor safe - need key

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Opening a floor safe - need key

Postby charliechanhockchye » 16 Aug 2018 3:18

Hello everyone. I have found a round floor safe in our 1953 Salem Oregon home embedded into the garage concrete floor and was painted over and hidden until recently.
This door has a name plate as follows:
MODEL-A-
DOUBLE DOOR IN-A-FLOOR
PAT NO 1-887866-1,919.64 (as best I can make out)
MANUFACTURED EXCLUSIVELY BY IN A FLOOR SAFE COMPANY
195759 S.LOS ANGELES ST., LOS ANGELES CALIF

I need a key. I found a previous post by 68merc 9 Mar 2013 with attached picture of round door that looks just like mine. I have printed the conversations and recommended types of keys to fit the S&G 4161 or S&G 4163 and have shared these with local lock-smiths and been told that they cannot help. I've looked for a safe-tech but with no success.

What's my next step? And thank thanks in Advance
Greg

Your post is in This Old Lock which is meant for house locks, moving it over to This Old Thread where it will get more answers, and folks can find it easier in the future.

Could you please share a photo of your safe with us, it is hard to imagine what it looks like without any pictures. Upload them to the Internet however you normally do, or upload to tinypic.com or imgur.com or photobucket.com, etc. and Copy/Paste the link to the picture here.

Here is a link for everyone to the thread you mentioned in your post: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=56689#p412749

Thank you,

The Safe And Vault Technician Association (SAVTA) website http://www.savta.org/savta_tech.php? shows 2 qualified safe experts in your area.

When you call, mention you have a round door floor safe in the garage, and it uses a single nose safe deposit lock with flat key. Ask if they can either impression a key, use a safe deposit lock pick, or can they drill and scope the lever gates.

A place in Wilsonville, just North of you

and a safe technician in Salem, Oregon who may or may not be in the business any more...

hope this helps,

Have one of those Double Door In-A-Floor safe doors in my collection. It looks like this:

Image

The standard lock used in those safes is a Sargent and Greenleaf 4160 Series safe deposit lock. Which model used depends on when it was made. The 4160 series was first made in 1945, and AFAIK it is still being produced.

If the door is older than 1945, it may have a different lock. It may also have been repaired or replaced and have a newer or different lock. But this is where I'd start.

Keep in mind that this safe door does have two relockers which are fired if the lock is punched. Will not give pictures or more information about the lock or relockers on the open forum.

Squelchtone is correct that your best bet is to get a decent safe tech to open the lock for you. If the tech needs to do destructive entry (ruin the lock itself), at least he/she will know what kind of replacement lock to bring along.
