Is this really Mosler Safe?

Thanks so much for helping. Did u read anywhere that Mosler had a fire an alot of the records were destroyed sometime in the 1800.
The Mosler history is pretty vague I think because of security.
Wish I could find someone to talk to that worked there. They had a reunion back in July 2014.
The serial number on the handle is 23068.
I have spent many hours looking on the web.

What's your end goal? Just personal satisfaction of knowing how old it is, or is it to establish a history so it can be sold as a valuable antique?

When you take the combination wheel cover off the lock, what 3 or 4 numbers are stamped onto it?

Its really my husbands an my satisfaction of knowing how old it is.
Selling is not an option at this time.
We like old things.
History is very important. I try to explore on our own an then I love these forums when I have gone as far as we can on our own.

I'm by no means the end all be all expert on this stuff, but from what I have read and researched, if I had to put it in writing, your safe is anywhere from 1867 to 1888 and possibly made by Mosler Bahmann, Mosler, or Hall's

You should also visit antique-locks.com forum and not mention any of this to them and see what conclusions they come to based on the photos you shared with us. There is also another lockpicking/safe forum called keypicking.com which some of us belong to and some of their members hang out here, so that's another place to post this and see what their members come up with.

Good luck with your project and we would love to see photos after you restore it.

https://www.antique-locks.com is probably the forum with the most knowledgable persons about antique safes. https://keypicking.com is certainly not better than here for dating this safe. And it is for my taste a bit to quiet regarding safes at the moment.

My non-expert guess because of the "baroque" decoration would have been 1870s/80s.

Thanks for all the Ideas given on the age an maker of this safe. I will try to post on other forums.
I will also post on the finished safe. It has been striped an primed an close to being painted.
We really would like to know so if the safe needs any kind of lettering we could apply that.
Also we needed to know the insert that goes on the dial on the combo lock.
Does anybody know what that should be.
