The one I've seen (for the Protector) makes access to the keyway much, much more difficult. A picking implement that may have worked before now has to operate around the corner of the loading hole too. In my opinion, this makes it a lot harder to pick. I would MUCH rather make a tool that had direct access to the keyway.

My favourite three key safe locks of modern origin:

S&G CLOCK (aka Prima, probably aka 6800): Not without problems, but at the moment my favourite by far. It is just awesome! Operation is described in patent US4375159.
S&G FAS: The used materials could be better, but it is indeed an innovative system with a really compact bitting.
cawi 1824: Solid standard design with a relatively compact bitting. Disadvantage is the far back bolt position.

There are so many old safe locks of which I know so little that it would not be fair to pick a few.
