Info: My Invented Make-Shift QuickPic

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Info: My Invented Make-Shift QuickPic

Postby amature enthusiast » 25 Nov 2004 15:37

i have a method for making my own pics (when i need one and don't have my tools with me). i assure you that this idea will result in a pic of nearly the same quality as a professional pic as long as you have some idea of what your doing.
anyway, i make my "quick-picks" by taking an old car windshield wiper. inside alot of windshield wipers there are long (c.1.5ft) metal strips. these strips are the perfect thickness and are EXTREMELY strong. i have never broken one. just to say though, i have found that some wipers contain pieces that are too big so it wont always work (but i find about 95% are ok for this idea). well once you have removed the metal strip you must cut it the desired length for the pic (you can make 3-4 picks out of each strip). once the strip is cut to desired length you must form one end of the piece to resemble a pick(i always make a rake-resembling shape as i feel comfortable with this shape). i shape my pieces quickly using an electric workshop grinder or when in the field i use a file. the result will be (i guarantee) a working extremely strong pic. the other great aspect of the windshield wiper trick is that you can also use the same metal strip, bend it 90 degrees and tada....you have a tension wrench. also when everything is formed as desired, wrap electrical tape around the other end of the pick so that you have something to hold onto. dont know if any of you out there already know about this trick, but i worked in a garage this summer and ended up taking alot of broken things apart when i stumbled upon these metal strips and with a little melon scratching came up with an idea of what i could do with them. i have never met anybody out there who has tried this so maybe i am the first. either way, if you do try it, please let me know how it went. hope this info was helpful to those of you out there looking to make your own pics as this is rather stress free(ive made many of these since i thought of the idea and can now make a tension wrench with 5 different styles of pics in about 10 minutes from start to finish). i hope this post might also help those that are experienced in picking in case you ever dont have your tools along. once again, if anybody tries my trick or knows of this already please let me know and i hope my babbling at least helped someone

It's actually a fairly popular pick making material. Looks like you've reinvented the wheel. Always something to be proud of though, especially when it's a good wheel. I was looking through the Lockmasters catalog and was surprised to see, all most every one of my ideas for manipulation aids had already been done and were available for very steep prices.

thank you for your reply TowCH. yes i figured someone out there had already done it. i think its the same for all of us, we always find our own new tricks and ideas, get very excited, and then we go online to find that someone has had the patent for "your" idea for the past ten years. oh well, i tried. back to the drawing board. ps did you mean they have been made from the same material, or has it been posted to make them from the actual wiper insert?

I used butter knives, Just take them to an electric grinder. Then dip the handles in some of that grip goo for added comfort.

You guys REALLY need a thesaurus.

Unique is a synonym for different. As in he picked two completely different locks, but picked one of them twice.

So, he has successfully picked two unique locks three times.

HAHA, Thanks for the backup there. That is indeed what I meant. easily confused though.

Hey I noticed this forum does not have a quick reply feature at the end of the thread, I really like that feature. (is it possible to set in my prefs?)
