Chatwood safe

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Chatwood safe

Postby Sleutelboertje » 28 Nov 2018 14:53

Today I picked up this safe. First big and heavy safe for me.
Lock was in locked position but door open. So I could remove some filler and unscrew the back side of the door. Paint is in good condition I think. Nice and vintage 8)
Lock is a Chatwood Invincible. I removed the lock and now I have to make a key.
Fingers crossed :D

Great! You are really lucky! But I have one bad news for you. I can clearly see this safe. So it can't be a Chatwood Invisible.

PS: Really interesting lock.

Yes, your right. Auto correction. I see it now. Maybe a moderator can change it!
Thanks Martin.

The lock looks like it has the anti-pressure device. This automatically blocks the bolt when tension is applied with a pick. I have the pipe key version of this lock and haven’t found a way to pick this one open.

The same as the Hobbs Protector? Did you try impressioning? Maybe there is some indication there?

With my Hobbs Protector the key did not work any more due to wear. Then they apparently forced this lock open which lead to a deformation of the stopping post on the back plate so that the bolt stump lever could slip over it and the lock open.

With the lock off the safe as pictured, it would be easy to make a key just by fitting it. The key equivalent of figuring out the combination to a safe if you have the lock open.

Thanks everyone! I have made some extra pictures of the anti pressure device. Works great and what an invention!
And I’ve started with the key :D

Yes, that is the same mechanism as that in the Hobbs Protector and actually the S&G FAS 6890.

Key is working! Cleaned the lock, polished the levers so it runs very smooth.
Happy me..... :D

Good work! The original key would probably not have looked much different as English keys according to my experience have no fancy decoration.
