Opening a Victor fireproof file cabinet with no cylinder

Postby teleguru » 6 Dec 2018 18:38

I have an old Victor fireproof two drawer file cabinet. When I tried to unlock it yesterday, the cylinder broke and came out with the key.
The cylinder is a four pin type. I have all the pins, but not the springs. This one has the pop-out type lock.
How do I open this cabinet?
Thank you for your help.

Picture of front of cylinder and or key would show not broken into? Drilled out or otherwise.
Tail is broke off, should be able to turn with right size screwdriver. Look inside cylinder to see what it takes.
Moderators remove if needed. Good Luck

you'll need to put something in to the hole and drag the spring loaded bit down until the lock housing pops out of the door about 1/2 an inch. light up the hole with a flashlight to see what's cooking inside.

another video that explains what you are aiming for

No luck yet, but I wanted to ease the thought that this file cabinet had been broken into.

can you try to grab lock body with pliers and pull it out of the cabinet? any way to get a flash photo of the tunnel to see what's in there to grab onto? A big flat blade screw driver may be able to turn the plate all the way in the back. should turn left or right.

and thank you for taking the time to answer strat's concern, much appreciated.

Not a verygood pic, it's difficult to get a light source and a camera in the same space!
I was able to pull the lock body out about 1/8th inch using a needle nose vice grips.

Don't think this will help much, and I've made a mess of the housing, but maybe it will help.

In your 8:15 post photo, you can see a small piece in the top, back of lock. You need to pry it down. Good Luck

This is the kind of job I used to get called on the phone to fix--Guess I don't need to stock these replacement locks anymore, as folks don't seem to need my help any longer

Yeah they do. Probably not this one. You give a lot of good input.

I was finally able to get into the cabinet.
The lock wouldn't budge, so I carefully used a large screwdriver to move the drawer enough to disengage the lock.
Now all I need to do is get the lock body out of the unit, and replace the lock.
Thanks to everyone that helped me take care of this problem.

Good deal. Keep the old lock for measurement to replace with new, they make different lengths.
