Watling Penny Scale Coin Box Lock

Postby cjercjer » 19 Dec 2018 0:22

Hello,
I have an old Watling penny scale with a coin box inside. I am going to drill out the rivots and replace with a new lock and key, but I havent been able to find a lock like this on the web. And I cant even find out what a lock like this is called. The key would seem to be a flat key much like a safe deposit box key. Can anyone help with the name of a lock like this or where I might find one to order.
Thanks so much.

It is a lever-tumbler lock, similar to most safety deposit box locks. It is possible that there is no newly manufactured replacement.

Have you thought about finding a locksmith shop that could impression a flat key? Or, if you do drill the rivets, have one fit a key and reinstall the lock? That would keep the original lock.

+100 to Jacob Morgan's idea about drilling out rivets and taking lock to a locksmith shop to get a key made, this way it is the original lock to the scale and retains most of its historical value.

Here is a similar lock and what the key typically looks like.

These style locks come with different length noses (the tube sticking out of the lock body) for different thickness panels or wooden drawers.

Here is a cut sheet on another C84xx model lock the C8402

Your locksmith can either make a key or more than likely order you a whole new lock and keys from CompX National.

Is the lock open? Try Googling "Watling penny scale key", then click Image. Saw one that would be close to your key, they also used Bell keys(inverted tip, inner grove through center). Sure it is not that, but a flat key, looks like a lever lock, curious what a lever tumbler key is? Hold off drilling if possible. Good Luck
