Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Cary Safe - need help accessing

Postby Moose576 » 3 Jan 2019 16:20

Hello! I have a Cary Safe #81568. I mistakenly locked this safe not realizing that the only 2 people who had the combination have both passed away recently. Someone put white dots on the following numbers: 50, 12, 41, 40 but I do not know if these are the correct numbers nor do I know the correct order. I have read through this whole webpage regarding Cary Safes and it appears that this may be an older safe than ones that have been talked about. I have tried every combination of these numbers but I'm not sure if it is supposed to stop on the last number or if I need to try between a range of numbers (90-110) while pulling on the handle. I have attached pictures for your review.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Your safe has the Cary C-5 Straight Tail Piece direct entry safe lock.

You're in luck, you can get this open. It is not impossible. The last number dialed in the opening procedure will be 40 on the driver wheel.

if you press and hold the handle and turn the dial, it should bind every so often, those are the false notches on one of the wheels.

To be honest your paint marks look like random splotches and not actual markings for a combination, but you'll know soon enough when you get it open.

You will have to figure out 3 numbers and then turn to 40 and try the handle.

You will have to turn the dial 4 times in the same direction, then stop on a number you wish to test, lets use 10 on the dial as an example, then turn the dial back to 40 and measure how far the handle can move. Then repeat this test dialing 15, then back to 40, then try handle, then dial 20, back to 40 and try handle, and so on.

If you are really sure the paint marks = the combination then the possible combinations are

50 12 41 then dial to 40, then try handle
50 41 12 "
12 50 41 "
12 41 50 "
41 12 50 "
41 50 12 "

Have you been dialing like this?

4 times Left to 1st number
3 times Right to 2nd number
2 times Left to 3rd number
1 times Right to 40
Try the handle

Your wheel pack should look like this, notice the screw and screw holes, that's how the combination is set so there is a much smalled number of actual combinations vs 0-99 on each wheel. it would be easy enough to test only 10,20,30,40,50,60,70,80,90, 0 on each wheel then turn back to 40 and try the handle. or dial all the 5's.. 5 15 25 35 45 55 65 75 85 95. Probably an afternoon of dialing, time well spent.

example:

dial 10-10-10-40
dial 10-10-20-40
dial 10-10-30-40
dial 50-50-50-40
dial 10-40-50-40
etc

try these combos from an old book:

40-60-35 then 40
50-86-32 then 40
10-60-35 then 40
56-13-36 then 40 then try the handle.

Good luck,

Thank you for your help. I just wanted to let you know that I am still working on trying to access the safe. I will keep you updated on my success/failure just in case someone decides to visit southern Indiana and wants to take a try at it :)
