A Tale of Two S&G Change Keys

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Squelch,
I give you credit. With some wiggling and re-alignment, the change can insert all the way now.
So I'll mount the lock onto the safe and change the combo (wish me luck).

The change key is from a Mosler safe, so perhaps their change key matches the S&G?
I can't imagine Mosler would use S&G locks, but they could have copied the S&G locks so closely that they use identical change keys.

All Mosler change keys in the books are made from "two-winged" stock like your first key, but it could be that there is a Mosler key which has the same tip than the S&G key. Then someone could have used a S&G key on the Mosler lock. Or Mosler used an S&G lock. Or someone exchanged a Mosler lock for an S&G lock.

I'm glad you got the change key to work but please believe me when I tell you that your change key was made in kentucky by the Sargent & Greenleaf factory and is only meant for S&G locks. the change key hole on a Mosler is a square with the flag coming out of one of the flat sides, the S&G key profile is a square at an angle with the flag coming out where two edges meet.

I think its just weird coincedence that you found it laying near or on top or inside a Mosler safe.

its like finding a chevy logo hub cap in back of a ford taurus at the junk yard, it doesnt mean that the chevy logo hub cap must belong to that ford, it just ended up in its trunk somehow.

Have a good weekend everyone!

It's a Mosler safe, 40+ yrs old, with a single outside lock, and 6 to 8 interior drawers with their own locks. All locks are marked group 1 or 1R. Seems like the outside lock in an S&G, and the interior drawers are Mosler.
I'm guessing the outside lock was replaced at some point, and an S&G was used in the replacement..
It's a work safe, and it seems that every 10 or 20 yrs the combo gets lost and they have to do an entry. Actually that's why the safe is down in the shop now: combo was forgotten, and they drilled the lock right at the fence, and opened it.

Both keys were hanging inside the safe, on what appeared to be a designated key holder.
