Old Victor

Howdy, I have a lovely old Victor Safe which is locked and needs opening. It's a family heirloom, so I'm loathe to drill it, but have no combination. I've heard victor used some of their serial numbers in combos? This has a Oct. 2, 33 date & 5 digit serial number on the dial cap.

To my knowledge it's a 4 digit combo w a L-R-L-R order. Any advice on manipulation techniques or experts in the Norther NE area much appreciated...please DM as appropriate.

Thanks Squelchtone! Yeah, it's a lovely old safe that's been in my family since purchased new. I'm in the Portland Maine area.

Any ideas on what a sound adjustment to those factory preset combination strings might be for a dial that only goes through 60?

I can't help you with the combination but here are a couple pictures of the lock in a Victor I have from the same time period. This should be the lock that is in your safe. I forget the model at the moment and don't have time to look it up. There are less combination possibilities with this style lock. Other members should be able to tell more. Now, after warming up, back to getting the snow off the roof...

Edit: My lock does have 100 numbers. Your lock could have one less wheel with the 60 dial. I think the inner door on my safe is 60 numbers. I will have to look again, it's been awhile. lol

Those pictures are very helpful 00247, with only 60 numbers, each gate probably 5 numbers wide, that's 12x12x12 possible combitions. at that point, start with 0 0 0 and dial to 95 95 95 and every possible number in between for 1728 different possible combinations.

there is what some people call the 4th number,which is really the thick cam wheel which has to be turned back to the drop in where that beak shaped thing falls in and then retracts the bolts. Last turn looks like it would be to the right, so the dialing order should be Left Right Left, then Right until the drop in occurs and you then keep turning to retract the bolts.

I found this dialing order in another Victor thread:

"Left 4 times to 1st number
Right 3 times to 2nd number
Left 2 times to 3rd number
Right 1 time around to 54 then, fence drops in, and keep turning right/clockwise to retract bolts."
