Old Sargent and Greenleaf safe

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Old Sargent and Greenleaf safe

Postby aaronstalter » 28 Feb 2019 14:59

Hi guys, I have a safe a guy wants me to open. There are some pictures below. I am looking for more info about exactly how the wheels and fence etc. work in this type of lock. I know how a STAR combination dial works and this looks similar from pictures I've seen. Can the nose in this type of lock be heard when it falls in the notch? I want to manipulate this lock and also need info on how to go about graphing results. Any help would be appreciated and I don't know if everything I'm asking for can be posted in this part of the forum but I'm hoping for something. Thanks!!

Looks like a standard S&G 6730 made after 1972, 3 wheels, should feel some bumps around 95 and around 10 on the dial.

I'm not sure we can fully teach you manipulation from scratch in this part of the forum, even if we could, it's something that requires much practice, and nothing we can impart to you from reading a post or two. Maybe a few months to a year of practice and you might be able to open it, or you could try some common combinations and get lucky.

try 50-25-50, 25-50-25, 25-50-75, 20-40-60, 20-60-40, 50-50-50, 10-20-30..

Lots of video on youtube that show proper dialing procedure for one of these.

to dial 25-50-75 you would

Dial Left 4 times to 25 (this means: pass 25 3 times, stop on it the 4th time)
Dial Right 3 times to 50 (this means: dial 50 2 times, stop on it the 3rd time)
Dial Left 2 times to 75 (this means: dial 75 1 time, stop on it the 2nd time)
Dial Right until dial stops dead around 90

Dial the combination to the Y shaped index which is called a crow's foot.

Thanks for the super-fast reply. I had a STAR in-floor safe that was locked but had the door was out of the body. I took the back cover off and after messing with it, I finally figured out what was going on and I was able to find the combo. I then modified an Allen wrench that I used to change the combination and then I sold it on eBay for $300 dollars. (I got it free) :D :D Anyway, I want to try this safe out but can't seem to find any info on how to graph the clicks made by the nose to get three numbers that should be the numbers in the combo. I mean, I've read that it can be done but I don't know how to go about making a graph and using it. Once again, if you can't post that on here, I'll have to keep trying.

It's not that I cant post it here, its that it would be pages and pages of someone writing it up, it is something better taught in person or watching a video.

There is a document written by Matt Blaze which talks about the idea of why and how safe manipulation works. I personally dont call them clicks and I believe the general public has been bamboozled by hollywood into thinking that when you turn a safe dial it makes clicking noises. If anything the metal on metal banging sounds you are hearing is the wheels, flys, and cam interacting with each other as each wheel is picked up, moved, and parked.

Try this write up: https://cdn.instructables.com/ORIG/FXD/ ... V0NMPV.pdf

and then read this one: https://www.mattblaze.org/papers/safelocks.pdf

here's a blurry video I found of how your lock works, this may be something you are already well aware of, just posting it here for anyone who may not know how they work:

super helpful video, and important to safe cracking and manipulation because you have to know the basic operation really well in order to then learn how to manipulate a lock open

Actually many times if I have a manufacturer that I'm registered with like Sentry is just call them and get the combo that safe was set to when it left the factory. I find that is the cheapest way to get into it for my client
