baldwin deadbolt

Postby guy22 » 23 Apr 2019 6:42

hi everyone :)
question for today,,,, i have a baldwin double deadbolt mounted separately above the mortise lock.
I want to remove and unscrew deadbolt for rekeying ,,,
i know there are 2 long screws to remove from inside ,,,
my question is "how do i remove decorative cover covering the 2 screws" ???
please look at top deadbolt, trying to remove cover to expose 2 screws,
ring around cylinder appears small,,, not easily twisted or unscrewed ??? thank you.

On almost all of them you grasp the entire inside trim and unscrew it. The brass ring will come off and a faceplate is covering the screws

This looks like a mortise lock. Are there screws on the edge of the door that are on the same center line as the cylinder? If there are, those are the retaining screws. All you need do is loosen them and unscrew the cylinder. I am not really familiar with Baldwin. The same screws could be located under the plate on the edge of the door. I hope this helps.

My guess is that the face plate comes off like a Schlage or Kwikset, Hook a small flat screwdriver or other hook type tool into the face below the key way and gently see if the plate moves. They are just snapped in place.

is this called a mortise dead-bolt ??? are there cylinder retaining screws behind long edge plate >> after removing edge plate ??
I'm trying to help a friend do this rekey himself,, he actually lives cross country and i know nothing about mortise locks
,,,, but i am a fast learner
Friend will be taking cylinders to local locksmith for rekey,,, just trying to $ave $ervice call charge,,, low in cash !!!

That is the first time I have seen a Baldwin mortise deadbolt only lockset, somewhat interesting-
so you unscrew the 2 screw on the face, then pry the cover plate off--there will be a screw, at the same height as the keyholes you want to have rekeyed--unscrew that screw 3-5 turns, then I like to put a key (partway) into each cylinder, and try to unscrew each of your mortise cylinders. If they don't want to come out you can loosen or remove the 2 screws top & bottom, under the plate you took off. Sometimes tightening the cylinder will help it break free, sometimes they are very hard to get out--You don't want to force them out, because they are usually very hard to get back in, if they come out badly.

Reassy: It would be easiest for you to note exactly where each mortise cylinder is, when it comes out of the lockbody (big case still in the door), this would aid you in reassembly without the risk of stripping the very fine threads on each cylinder. So, other then stripping the threads you just screw each cylinder back in till it's snug with the door, you may have to unscrew it a bit in order to get it properly oriented, just as it was before you took it out originally. Carefully tighten the lock screw under the plate. Check operation with the key on both sides

Good luck & I hope you don't find out the hard way why people pay for the service call
IDK if that lock is still available, in case it did suffer some hardship. Baldwin originally had a 50 year warranty, I think but yours likely predates 1970-- just a guess, judging from the trim collars around the actual cylinders
