i recently got an old safe with a yale lock, and am unable to open it. i have the combination (19-17-29) but the person who owned it before and myself have been unable to open it. the guy who originally owned it, said that it started sticking, so he removed the stuff that was in there and stopped using it.
i don't know much about opening these safes and could use some help.
this is what i tried so far:
--the combination using - 4R, 3L, 2R, 0,....... 4L, 3R, 2L, O
--changed the order of numbers and tried the six variations
-- changed one number +/- 2 and tried each variation
--changed all numbers +/- 2 at the same time
-- hit the safe with a rubber mallet each time i stopped the dial
--after the last number was entered, i tilted the safe and let it drop.
the dial seemed to have a little more resistance at some points after using a mallet.
thanks for any help, i certainly appreciation it.

4L to ?, 3R to ?, 2L to ?, R to stop. (with correct combo).

after you dial the combination, does the dial stop dead and then you try to turn the little handle?
are you sure the dial to 0 is correct?
dial the combo L R L and then turn Right until the dial stops, dont dial specifically to zero.

i have no idea if i should stop at zero or not.... but i have many times and gone past it many times. sometimes it seems to pick up a little friction around 10 on the way back to zero, but i'm not sure what this means.
i have never got to the point where the dial stops.

since the 1st number 19 is so close to the 2nd number 17, once you have seen 19 pass the dialing index 3 times and you stop on it the 4th time around dialing Left, next, when you go to dial 17, are you counting the 17 you encounter just 2 dashes after you start dialing in the Right/Clockwise direction in the 2 times you dial past 17 and then the 3rd time you stop on 17? also, how trusting are you that the combo you were provided is corrrect? was there a hand written note? some folks use their own home brewed short hand that we can often figure just by seeing how they had it written on their cheat sheet.

i have been including turning past those 2 dashes to 17 as one pass..... but i just tried an extra turn with no luck.
4L, 4R, 2L, R and also tried 4L, 4R, 3L, R.... with no luck.
i am not really confident with the combo because the guy before me never got it open either. it wasn't written down, he just had it in his head.
i had been trying start left as well as starting right....... is one more common than the other?
