how come the tongue on my brand new cylinder lock is twisted like that? i looked up other images of the same cylinder lock that i have on google, and they all look like what you see in the image above. so does that mean the tongue is supposed to twist like that?

What is the brand of lock. If you looked it up and all the ones you see look like that I would say yes it is made that way. The cam screws and plate are at an angle normally the screws are straight in line with the mounting screws at 3 and 9 O'clock position so looks like it is twisted so the tailpiece is vertically straight up and down.

You dont mention the brand or model number of the cylinder but it could be for a specific application that requires it.

The cylinder looks new so I dont think it was something that has been field modified.

sorry for not mentioning the brand of the lock in public, but my somewhat paranoid father gave me explicit instructions not to do so, and i myself was planning on using PM to give out that information to whoever replied, but anyways the brand new lock we purchased is a mul-t-lock junior. agian sorry for not mentioning it earlier.

anyhow my dad had found a locksmith and had the lock hastily installed, (i wanted to install it for him, but he thinks i'd jam the door because i'm a n00b) so the tongue turns and works perfectly, but something...shall i say, unpleasant still occurred during the installation of the lock by the local locksmith. here's what happened:

basically, my father was with the locksmith at the front door, and he asked if we had ordered the cylinder lock from overseas, and when my father affirmed to him that it indeed was, the locksmith then discreetly took one of our brand new keys and placed it inside his locksmith carrying bag for unannounced and undisclosed reason, before he quickly took the key back out of his bag again.

so my father is quite furious now, he says i should've took the day off to kept an eye on the locksmith with him. right now he is VERY concerned with the possibility that the locksmith might've had some kind of miniature, portable key scanning machine inside his bag, and my father suspects that the ulterior motivated locksmith might have inserted our brand new key into his secret key duplicating machine which then scanned our key without our consent, thus the locksmith now has a digital copy of our key with which he could use to make a real key with, hence our new lock is now worthless due to what my alleged is a compromised key.

since someone broke into our home before, i can't say i blame his paranoia, and we've dealt with it the usual way by pointing fingers and yelling at each other, but i figured i ought to consult with all of you experts here regarding the existence of such thing as a "portable key scanner" which my father strongly believes that it exists.

so i guess my question is, is there such thing as a portable key scanner that most locksmiths would carry around for whatever reason?

thank you so very much for helping me time and again, i am truly thankful to all of you!

No electronic device is needed for a MTL Junior. A piece of clay or wax would suffice to make an impression of the key. I am no expert, but don't think the Junior has a movable element in the key. But if it did, the impression would show what kind of movable element was required.

This does not mean the locksmith was making an impression of the key. Just answering your question about whether it was possible.

thank you so much for sharing this info with me. i checked the key and there is no movable element there.

my father still insists that we change the lock again and i dont want to fight him on it, though i dont believe the locksmith had ever duplicated our keys either.

thanks again for all your help!

having watched the locksmith do it, can you both handle changing out the cylinder yourselves this time?

or if another locksmith is coming out, hold on to the keys and if they need the key to test the lock, you walk up and insert the keys, don't let the locksmith handle the keys.

what country are you in? was the locksmith you called from a real shop or was it some $300 an hour scammer working out of the back of his car? If you are in some small town or village, I could see the locksmith making a cast of your key so that when you call in a month or two when you get locked out, he magically arrives with a key to let you in, instead of picking or drilling the lock. It is awful shady to slip the key in his bag no matter what the intention.

yes i watched some youtube tutorial, i think i can do it myself, i'm not confident with cutting the tongue so i'll jst unscrew the old one and put it in the new MTL junior lock we will be ordering

we'll follow your advice and remember to keep the keys to ourselves at all times.

we live in the city, the locksmith we called is from a real shop, according to my father he asked for one of our keys prior to installing the lock, he says he can't install the lock without the key, so my father gave it to him, but then he puts our key and only the key in his bag with his hands, where my father couldn't see what he was doing with it.

thank you so much for your help!

There are multiple things the locksmith could have been doing legitimately putting the item in the bag. There are several that are not..

There are several systems for making a key copy that would fit even in a small bag.

But, he could have also been wirebrushing the key to reduce drag, maybe he put some protective lubricant on it then put it in the keyway.

It would be hard to say, not being there, and not being able to watch.

Block out about 45 minutes to change your cylinder. Pay very close attention to how the (new) old one is in there. Especially notice how far in the cylinder is placed into the mounting fixture (bexel, escutcheon, etc). Also notice if there is some sort of hex nut or stake preventing the cylinder from rotating in the lock fixture. NOT allowing the cylinder to rotate, ever, is very important.

As far as what's going on with the tailpiece, speaking about US residential and commercial systems, I have seen flat, and 'twisted' like in the picture. As long as what that piece interfaces with turns smoothly (and on a house), it's not a security or a mean time between failure risk.

Good luck!

Hang on the locksmith just dropped the key in his tool bag and then retrieved it and gave it to your father? Sounds like dad is being paranoid to me. I throw things in my bag because I don't want to lose them. If a customer doesn't trust me with their keys I walk away from the job. Also if you ordered the lock I hope you didn't have it shipped to the address where it is being installed!
