Two deadbolts and padlock keyed alike options

Thinking of upgrading your door security? Getting a better deadbolt or padlock? Getting a new frame or better hinges? Not sure what brand or model to go with for your particular application? Need a recommendation? Feel free to ask for advice here!

Two deadbolts and padlock keyed alike options

Postby jaydee3388 » 6 Aug 2019 9:12

1.) What are you looking for?
Two deadbolts for garage to house, one padlock for outdoor shed (all three keyed-alike)

2.a) If you know for sure what is the general type you should mention that too.
?

2.b) What part of the world are you located in?
Northeast USA

3.) What is your budget?
~$125-200

4.a) What is the threat level?
Quiet home in a suburb of a medium size city

4.b) What level of lock are you looking for?
Ah… Middle? Upper Middle?

5.) Are there any special requirements? (Like it needs to be dirt resistant because you live in a sandy desert, or on the contrary it goes into a lighthouse so has to withstand lots of salty water? Or with safes: does it have to be portable, does it have to be fireproof? Padlocks: indoors, outdoors? How about water & dirt?)
Not really. One padlock would be outdoors (on a garden shed).

6.) Generally, try to provide all the relevant information but in a brief, succinct way.
I already purchased three Mul-T-Lock (Cronus) Interactive+ deadbolts (keyed alike) and 4 keys for all three exterior doors (front door, back door, man-door to garage) for about $400.

I’m looking for 2 additional deadbolts from (attached) garage to the house, as well as one padlock (all 3 locks keyed alike). Not looking to protect Fort Knox here, (more like lawnmower, kids bikes), but I was hoping for a step up from the Home Depot stuff for less than $150. I could get all three for about $200 with Mul-T-Lock Junior, which I could do, but I’m not sure if it’s the best bang for the buck. The padlock on the garden shed could be a cheapo (you could easily saw through plywood sheathing if one wanted to), but I want to minimize the number of different keys I have to carry. MTL Interactive+ would be great, but a bit overkill and another ~$400 is a bit much just to save on carrying one more key.

Side questions: Are you more worried about someone getting in without any sign (e.g. picking, bypass) or are you more worried about brutal attacks (like drilling).
Picking/bypass

Will you lend the keys to people from time to time = is it important that other people can't copy your keys?
Yes, I will lend the keys from time to time, but key copying is not a big concern. I trust the people I would lend to.

And yes, I'm aware the total security of the house/premise is more than the locks. I will be reinforcing windows with the non-break film, checking the general strength of the door/frame itself, etc.

With your very limited budget of $125-200 I'm going to suggest you try Kwikset's Smart Key lock
unfortunately the keys can be duplicated everywhere, however since many hardware stores have
no way to adjust their key machines correctly you should be OK

I would suggest Schlage deadbolts and a Kryptonite padlock with Schlage core to key alike to the deadbolts.

deadbolt:

padlock example, you may find an online place with better prices:
https://www.andersonlock.com/product/ks ... e-padlock/

As Bill said, with your budget there will be limits. Schlage makes much nicer commercial deadbolts but they would eat up your budget just on 1 deadbolt. The B60 series is what they make specially for the residential market, they talk a big game about Grade 1 and blah blah but it's really just a basic Grade 2 deadbolt, although you may find some spool pins in them to protect from picking.

You could go hard core and get Medeco high security deadbolts for $129 a deadbolt on ebay ( a great price compared to retail), and its a double sided deadbolt, which may not be needed for your garage to house door, but if someone was in your house, you could keep them out of the garage with a double sided deadbolt: https://www.ebay.com/itm/173626280466 they can key them alike as well and free shipping if you buy 2.

The obvious hard part is then buying a Medeco padlock and keying it up match your deadbolts, but perhaps the seller who is a Medeco locksmith can sell you a keyed alike padlock as well.

Thanks for the input guys. Is there anything in between Schlage B60N @ $35 each and Mul-T-Lock Junior @ $65 each, in terms of price and quality? Is the MTL Junior even regarded as better than the Schlage?

The Schlage I think I can just get the deadbolts and padlocks at HD, and match up the keying in the store. I think that's what we did for our last house, which is how I got two deadbolts and padlock keyed alike.

Thanks,
Jim

In terms of quality, a Schlage Everest would be a step up from most of their residential stuff as it has 6 pins plus a check pin on the bottom rear. Unfortunately, the price is also in the $65-$70 range on eBay, which is about what I bought some for retail probably 8-10 years ago. One nice thing about the Everest though is that it's not restricted (at least not on the C keyway) which means it will be fairly easy/cheap for you to get duplicate keys if you need them, but it's still esoteric enough that most petty crooks will not have a bump key or know the trick to picking it. Also you can get an Everest KIK cylinder to put in the Kryptonite padlocks that squelchtone mentioned (which by the way are pretty nice workhorse padlocks, I've got about half a dozen in my collection in various configs/sizes ;-) ).

Ok Thanks. I don't see 2 keyed alike Schlage Everest on ebay for $65, but I will keep my eye open if something comes up. Then need to figure out the padlock keyed alike.

That being said, would this be considered more secure than the MTL Junior? I can get my hands on the MTL Junior 2x deadbolts (single cylinder) and 1x padlock keyed alike for $220 out the door, is there a better deal (more secure or more bang-for-buck) to be found in the $150-250 price range?

I'm really only considering the single cylinder... if someone is in the house, entry into the garage is of little importance and I would worry about getting out of the house efficiently in case of fire or other disaster.

Thanks,
jaydee

Neither would be considered a high security lock, though the MTL is a dimple design which requires different tools and techniques to pick than the pin tumbler locks that are common here in the States. That being said, there is also a very simple impressioning method that is effective against many lower to medium quality dimple locks, though I can't remember if it works on the Junior or not.

I mentioned the Everest though because you said key control wasn't an issue (which is one area where the MTL would outshine it) and even though the acquisition costs are about the same, your total cost of ownership on the Everest would probably be much lower if you ever needed to maintain it (rekey the cylinder for some reason, get duplicate keys, etc). Because it is a standard pin tumbler design, most any competent locksmith (read: not Walmart or Home Depot) would be able to service it, sell you components, and probably cut keys. MTL service is a much more specialized niche, which means there's less people doing it and so the costs go up. For an investment of probably around $50 or so you could even get most of the tools and supplies needed to work on the Everest locks (and any other Schlage lock for that matter) yourself. Personally, that ability carries some value with me, as one of the first things I do when I buy any lock off the internet that's meant for actual security use (particularly one shipped to my home address) is rekey it. ;-)

Just buy any suitable padlock that takes a KIK cylinder. You can then get a KIK cylinder to match your deadbolts. Abus, American, Master, Paclock etc.
