repplacement options old deadbolt and passage handle

Postby cascade992 » 6 Aug 2019 19:16

hi, I have this old deadbolt on an exterior door:

I want to replace it w/ a double cylinder lock--do you think there will be any drilling required and is it possible to avoid it with certain locks?

And for the following passage knob, can I replace it w/ any passage handle without drilling?

The Schlage deadbolt is easily replaceable. Especially if replacing with another Schlage product. The problematic reason is that the hole through the door is only 1.5 inches wide. Most current locks are designed for a 2 1/8 inch hole. Also the hole in the edge of the door may only be 7/8 inch where current models need 1 inch.

The passage knob alone, can be replaced with many similar knobs to improve the appearance. You can use brass, glass, stainless or lots of special shapes and finishes. BUT, to replace the whole mortise lock inside the door will be more complicated. It might require use of a wrap-plate (strong but not the best look) or filling the hole in the door and re-drilling the correct mounting holes.

Don't throw away the old Schlage after you remove it. Someone here may want it for their collection or spare parts bucket.

Thank you,

thanks, it looks like it is painted in bad:

is there an easy solution to dealing with just the painted in handle mortice? I'd be just as happy with a dummy knob or handle if that'd be easier.

There are replacements for the mortise set. If you are lucky, its an easy swap out, sometimes you might need to do a little work on the door ie chisel work, but usually not bad.

Use a razor blade to carefully cut the paint, and remove. Fill the holes in the door with a dowel rod, toothpicks, a golf tee etc, whatever you can jam in there, and trim with the blade. This step makes sure your new screws have something to bite into.

I worked with my uncle one summer as a kid doing remodel work on old houses. Replaced a lot of these.
Did you hear something click?

Yes, cut the outline of the lock with a blade. Keep it straight and neat and the paint will be OK. These are long lasting locks. You might clean up the complete lock case, door face plates, and take the lock apart to clean and lube the inside. Dont forget to do the same care to the strike plate on the frame. If it is cleaned up you could continue using it as a passage lock or get a key to lock it with. Put a new knob on and it will be functional and look good.

If you just want: " I'd be just as happy with a dummy knob or handle if that'd be easier." You already have that. And us crazy lock people just wont be able to accept it.
