Mosler wheelpack ID

Postby lockedNloaded » 13 Aug 2019 18:21

I'm looking for a wheelpack for an old Mosler safe from the 30's or 40's, pictured below, and any info on it would be helpful. The pictured one belongs to a friend that coincidentally had the same lock box in a very different looking Mosler safe - I used the borrowed one for quite a while until he needed it again. My original would have had a pin on it to work a relocker, but the pictured one works fine.

Thing is, I don't even know the name/number of this wheelpack. I've seen suggestions that it might be a "Group 2" or a "BP 216" - but I don't know if either of those are correct, or if there's a more common name. In addition, how common or uncommon is this wheelpack? Thanks in advance for any help.

Lemme try a different image host...
The pics may not be great, but if you click on them you can see the whole wheelpack - it wasn't me that cut the edge off. :)

so you need the whole cover with the wheels attached to it?

(PS tinypic is going out of business soon, and all photos hosted there will go away)

Yep, I need the cover and wheels. And I think tinypic may have died right after you mentioned it.

Cool, thanks! Do you know the name/number/series/whatever of this wheelpack in case I'm outbid?

off hand its either something like a BP216 or a CD120, not entirely sure. I'd have to hit the books.. someone who knows more than me will hopefully see this and chime in.

From the book I would say the lock on ebay is a Mosler B-101. Three hand (mesh) change wheels and what Oldfast calls a flipper fence. You can see the turning point of the flipper fence right besides the lower screw. If your lock doesn't have this, then it is probably a CD-120.

Here's a shot of my lock box. I haven't heard the term flip fence before, but it seems fitting for the spring loaded latch in the corner. Would this mean it's a B-101 lock? FWIW, I have to double check but this safe may be quite a bit older than I thought based on the numbers in the "how old is my safe" thread.

Thanks very much for the lock ID. I realize my lock may have been replaced, but any idea when Mosler first used the B-101? I need to find the trim cover from inside the door to see if there are any other numbers on it, because the serial on the outside of the door is hinting this may be way older than I though (which would be kinda cool).

The books is written, that it was most common in the 1940s and 1950s. Maybe it was a war time invention.

Thanks. I found the correct serial number, and the safe is from the 40's - lines up with the production time for the lock.
