Need a car key safe

Postby scottj043 » 10 Aug 2019 10:55

I'm looking for a key safe I can hang on my car that is secure for when I go surfing. The perfect lock for me is the Kidde Keysafe

https://www.kidde.com/home-safety/en/us ... spin-dial/

The fatal flaw is that the Kidde is too small to hold the electronic fob of my new car.

The features I want are:

1) Easily removable after use
2) Don't have to carry a key to the box when I am surfing
3) Pretty secure
4) Can hold a modern electronic key fob
5) Able to withstand salt water

The Master 5400D keysafe is large enough to hold the fob but as you probably know anyone can open them with without even a tool after watching a YouTube video. I don't want a permanent mount key safe because it's a lease vehicle and I don't want to have to remount it every time I change cars or have a rental car.

The closest I have found are the following:

https://www.nusetlock.com/digital-lock- ... ackle.html

https://www.suprasystems.com/Products/Pages/Max.aspx

The thing I don't like about the Nu-Set is that I doubt it will last long in the marine environment and inevitable splashes of salt water from my wet suit. The thing I don't like about the Supra is I have to carry the key with me. Are there any other options out there? I would spend up to $200. I live in California.

does your car have a trailer hitch?

https://www.amazon.com/HitchSafe-HS7000 ... 000I66JEM/

When I go kayaking, I leave my key and alarm fob hidden inside my Jeep and I lock the doors using the electronic lock/unlock button the drivers door i stead of using the alarm remote and I take a spare key with me which is totally flat and does not have an RFiD chip head so it fits flat in my cell phone case. could you take a spare key with you and wear it on a string aroujdyour neck under wetsuit or are all your keys with the plastic chip head integrated with the fob or is your vehicle new and you only have a fob and no metal key? is there a hidden over rode metal key that slides out of the remote in case the battery is dead? would that fit in the kidde safe?

The car doesn't have a hitch receiver. The door cylinder is hidden under a plastic cover that looks like it would break in about a week of surfing so I can't hide the remote in the vehicle and just carry the mechanical key. Plus hiding the remote and fiddling with the cylinder cover takes time and as you know from kayaking every extra step it takes to get out on the water means there are fewer time windows big enough to have fun. I just bought Wetsoxx for my kids so they can get in and out of their suits faster and shorter tie down straps so that I dont have to spend as much time tying the strap tails off.

Interesting, I was not aware of these. Though looking at it I can't help but wonder if it's vulnerable to the relatively simple attack that plagues many cheap multi dial combination locks of this design (hopefully that's not saying too much in the open forums).

Probably. I have yet to see one which can't be opened easily. Perhaps there is something which could be locked with a padlock? In that case a 8088/8077* could be used. The older models might have vulnerabilities too, but these are much harder to exploit.

I was trying to think of a small lockbox that I could install a shackle on and then attach it to the outside of the car. But nothing came to mind and looking around the internet didn't yield anything. But there must be something.

do you have a factory roof rack or a basket or Thule rails or anything on the roof to attach a realtors lock box to?
Thanks

What kind of realtors lockbox are you thinking? The bluetooth ones won't work for me because I dont bring my phone surfing. Others have Simplex style pushbutton locks which have an exploit you can learn about on YouTube.

[EDIT: crap, its the one in your original post. Can you be a little more forthcoming and just show us a photo of your roof rack and of a fob just like yours so we can use that to get some better ideas?]

This Supra (now GE/Kidde) combination dial one comes to mind

Would your fob fit into this lock box which clips onto your car windows and even has a cover over the keypad so someone walking by doesnt notice what it is?

The first one you linked is the one I used before. My Sienna key barely fit in it but it worked and it couldn't be opened in a few minutes like the Master if someone didn't have the combination. And who is going to steal a 12 year old Sienna anyway? But I work for a car company and got promoted so now I will be getting a new car every 6 months (once it hits 6-8k miles I have to get a new one). It's a tough life, I know. :)

The thing I dont like about the window mount boxes is someone could smash the window and then they just have to smash the box with a large rock or something to get the key. This one might be more secure than than the Simplex style and I would carry the key around my neck under my wetsuit:

It would have to be a heck of a rock to smash open the Supra boxes

yes. I mean look, if you have that much spare money, you can always paypal me a donation to the forum at squelchtone at gmail dot com

That's def going over board. I think your Sienna locks are gonna work just fine if you use the flat metal valet key to unlock the door, and then have the fob hidden inside the car put it in a sock and leave it on the floor in the back seat. hang the key around your neck on a piece of paracord and call it a day. Now that I think about it, key boxes attached to windows are probably gonna attract some attention, so will a box dangling from your Thule roof rack. Is there a surfer community who would also be good to ask this same question so you can find out what others are already doing?

No money to burn, these are company cars. :|

It's ridiculous Kidde/Supra/TRW hasn't updated their product in probably 50 years. Hello guys, your lock doesn't fit car keys anymore! Hello, hello, anyone in there? They already make bigger products like the Supra Max, so it's not like they dont know keys are bigger these days. What would a new mold for a bigger box cost, $5k?

I'm going to try this:

https://keyfender.de/

It's not cheap, but one benefit is that I won't have to work a combination with cold stiff fingers at dusk this winter. This could work for kayaking too.
