Mosler Vault Lock- Refurbish

Forgot how to dial the combination on that old safe? Think you got the right numbers but the handle is stuck? What safe should you buy? Ask your safe questions here!

Mosler Vault Lock- Refurbish

Postby kld1648 » 1 Sep 2019 16:35

I'm in Real Estate as a day job, get to see some fun stuff in my day to day - client has a beautiful walk-in vault, circa 1989 when house was built. Cover was off on back, Mosler Group 2 from what I can tell. No model number yet, just the Mosler logo. The dial was super sticky, and didn't feel like it was hitting contact points properly. He said it isn't operational. I didn't spend long messing with it, but offered to refurbish as a learning experiment. If I get the go-ahead, will post photos and process.

Meanwhile, it seems Mosler stopped making these, though they offer Big Red refurbish kits. Assuming that is what is needed. Maybe a new lock altogether.

The bolt handles didn't seem to operate. There is an exterior and interior bold handle (so you can't lock yourself in, presumably). Door is in 'open' position so I have access.

Short of installing new lock, what are things I should pay attention to?

Any advice is helpful, even if it's something I'd figure out on my own.

Disclaimer: I'm not a Vault Tech, and am not charging anything. And I'm very new to this hobby. Just a fun thing to play with :)

The most important thing is to not lock the door without being 100% sure that it will open again by doing repeated locking/unlocking/bolt throw tests with the open door.

And some photos would be nice.

I'd test it a dozen times at least, all parts of the mechanism. Hate to piss of a client.

Will post photos if he agrees.

Thanks :)

The two most common problems are probably dirt (dust and hardened grease) and modifications done by others. Modifications can be convenience features (unlocking one lock is more convenient then two, being able to dial +/- 5 numbers is convenient, not being forced to lock the lock is convenient), disabling to prevent accidental locking or repairing attempts by stupid people. It could also be a real defect, e.g. something is broken or worn. So first thing is to understand how it is supposed to work and were problems are. Only then it can be really repaired. Depending on the condition a good cleaning won't hurt. Use lube inside the lock in only extremely small quantities. Most parts in locks don't need any lube.

I would say don't replace parts if not needed. As Martin just wrote, a proper cleaning and lubing of the correct parts can solve most problems. I have a service call tomorrow at a liquor store with a hard to turn dial. Based on the young age of the store's safe, I bet the dial ring moved or spindle got bent when someone walked by and hit it with a case of booze as I know the store office layout from past cctv/lock jobs there.

On your safe, were the combination wheels inside the lock body or were they grey plastic wheels attached to the back cover?

Would love to see photos, please share when you can.

If its a Mosler vault its probably the MR302 lock which hasnt been made in decades. But being on a home vault its probably good, just needs to be serviced. Keep in mind that it has a clicker at the drop in so it will feel different from other safe locks. Dont break any parts since you wont be able to buy any new ones.

If the lock bolt is extended and the back cover is off it will keep the handle from turning. (like it is supposed to)... Keep in mind there may also be a bolt protection rod on the hinge edge of the door that keeps you from turning the handle and extending the bolts until the door is closed.

I would service the lock first and get a good known combination, then go to servicing the bolt work if needed. As others have said the dried grease could be most of the issues.

Dont shut the door and turn the handle until you are SURE its working properly or you will get a crash course in vault door penetration.

I would suggest posting some pics and get some more advice before you dive into it assuming you get the go ahead.

Echoing the Dried Grease/ grime/ dirt/ dust. I like tearing things down 100% and cleaning. I know others are alluding not to, but as long as you are careful and documenting the process thoroughly, I do not see the harm.

Sorry for delay - Did receive permission to assess and attempt to re-engage mechanism or correct combination sequence. Time is my currency - waiting for a window to visit site and snap photos/tool around. Will post when there is something tangible to present. Have spent time thinking about it. Found a Mosler 302 manual, and a template that I had in storage. If that is the lock.. it looks easy enough to work with, short of buying an obscure change key ($40 if needed). Keep you posted when I know more.
