Hi, does anyone know of a fully analogue lock that uses an array of randomly North/South pole magnets for the locking mechanism- and an reverse image of that as the key? I am currently playing around with the 3d mechanism of a 5x5 grid for lock/key.

Check out Miwa and Corelock.

Oh yeah, this one is a real beauty! I found all these previously mentioned during my search as well, so I guess my design is still on the table as "new".

Tons of magnetic padlocks on the web.
Decades ago Alarm Lock made a wall switch that used a magnetic card and changeable grid of magnets. Early form of in-expensive access control.

How is your design different from a MIWA EC lock? Gordon

It's a lot like a magnetic padlock, but the locking mechanism (5x5 grid of magnets) is being held by a steel plate preventing any single magnet to pull it off the plate and unlock it. If a 5x5 grid of wrong orientation magnets are used, the combined attraction force is below the threshhold required to pull it off the plate (as the wrong orientation magnets repel).

Try to work it out in CAD. Either computer aided design or cardboard aided design. We cannot tell you if your idea is different if we do not understand what you came up with.

Done that, several version of it. I wonder if I could/should attach a .stl file here and if it would help understand it better...

We dont support any attachments and most people here cant view a cad file. Could you save a screenshot or two as a .png or .jpg and post them on photobucket or imgur and paste the link here? Thank you, Squelchtone

Or a link do the .stl file.
I like the old style magnetic padlocks. There are four magnets, each must be in the correct location to apply the correct angle for the steel pins.
Will take a picture of a cutaway one I have at home when I remember.
