Got some locks for practice

Postby petemoss » 30 Oct 2019 18:47

Hey guys,

As a beginner, today was an awesome day. I had mentioned on here that I needed to get some more locks for practice. A very generous person who I will let remain anonymous (unless he wants to be un-anonymous) sent me a 44 pound box of locks for free. Suffice it to say that there are a lot of locks and potential learning in there. There are a lot of different brands, some almost new, some rather old, some that I've never seen anything like.

The hard part is going to be figuring out what order to work on these. I decided for now to try and look at the smaller ones that have keys. That way I can test open the lock with the key to make sure it opens smoothly or to determine if it needs some cleaning/lubrication before jumping into it.

So far I have been able to single pin pick three of them, of course it could have been luck. They are:
    * Master No. 140
    * LSDA BP40
    * Yale Junior 714

I look forward to start learning how to remove the core from some of these to get familiar with working on the innards at some point.

I'll post some follow up as I go though some of the other ones. I hope there will be successes, but I imagine I will be posting a lot regarding failures.

Regards,

Well, I mean to put this in the beginner forum, but I messed that up somehow. If there is a way to move it that would be awesome.

So, as an update I have been able to pick a few more of these locks.

  • A small Safegard lock that says Slaymaker on the shackle.
  • A small brass Excel lock with no other markings. Could not pick. Cleaned and lubed, then was able to rake and then SPP.
  • A medium size Brinks brass lock with no other markings. Cleaned, lubed, and SPP.
  • A tiny ABUS Tough Security. Brass with a black body covering. Raked and SPP.
  • An old tarnished cool looking medium sized brass Segal which seems to have been beaten up a bit. I could not rake this one, but I did SPP it a couple times.

Some were much harder than the others. I certainly need to revisit them and learn more.

I also failed on many of them that I have tried. I will come back to them as I gain more experience. I may have to beg for help along the way.

Thanks to everyone for all of the insight provided so far.

Added one more picked lock today. It was a small brass Yale padlock with no other markings. It is different in that the body wasn't one uniform size but rather the bible area is thinner than the core area. The key looks like it has five pins, but I repeatedly SPPed it by manipulating three pins. Not sure the deal there.

You are making good progress.

Maybe you can post pics of your conquests in the What Did You Pick Today? thread. :)

Thanks Gordon. I didn't see that thread. I'll try setting up a photo site account and try it out.

I have encountered this with one of my pad locks it's like there's only one pin that needs manipulated. I can't rake it though
