I know that closing the shackle on a 8077 or 8088 scrambles the wheels by design. I wouldn't imagine that pressing and releasing the button would do the same thing, as then the gates would not be aligned for bolt retraction. So, I'm guessing that the reason for having to start over would be because one , two, or all three wheels had been moved while turning enough rotation to attempt bolt retraction. So, maybe, depending on what combination was dialed, there may still be a wheel or two in alignment when done checking, though the safe bet would be to completely redial each time.
Just going through 5s and 10s will take substantially more time than I originally thought, and the lock may be pretty worn by the time I get to the correct combination, if at all. I'd clamp some vice grips to the shackle to stop movement and give a quicker indication of a successful entry, but there is a hasp locked in the lock at this time.
