Destroyed half the springs in my Sparrows Revolver

Postby petemoss » 10 Dec 2019 22:47

Well, the title pretty much says it all. I was having some trouble picking my Revolver. I decided to make a logical progression by removing the pins from all the tumblers except two. Then I would work my way back up by adding one back at a time. So, aside from two of them I dumped all of the springs and both pins from each tumbler.

This worked really well until I turned it to one of the other bible locations. Given that there were no key pins in those tumblers, the driver pins and springs from all of those tumblers fell into the area where the key pins would normally be. So the springs were basically at the sheer line. Then when I turned it again it basically stretched/mushed the springs all into/across the sheer line. This made getting all of the carnage back out quite difficult.

As I had to remove basically all of the plugs to get spring junk out, I decided to just leave it emptied out except for the one bible setup that I am working my way though. Maybe as I progress I will eventually rebuild the whole thing.

Lesson to other newbies. If you decide to remove a pin or more, either remove the same pins from the other three bibles, or make sure you don't turn the plug to any of the other three positions. Actually, if you only removed the spring and driver pin but left the key pin in place then that might work, as long as you pick the lock right side up so that gravity works for you.

Expensive, but even eBay has springs. May be cheaper there, that was just my first result.

You can also go to MrLock.com or any number of sites.

Thanks for the info Gordon.

The Revolver came with some replacement parts, so I'm still okay for now, but it is good to have the information for when I need it.

When I read the topic title I could already tell what the problem was.

You may have done what I did. I accidentally put a drive pin in a key pin location. Not only did the key get stuck but I tore up a spring. Make sure you look at those pins closely. Had a terrible time getting it apart. Was very lucky I didn't destroy a brand new lock. I went the other way though, I got the progressive set and 2 security cutaways. I also crushed a spring with the tweezers. They're VERY fragile.
What will we do now?
