possible to use old rimlock's tongue in new MT5 rimlock?

Postby blueagent » 24 Dec 2019 7:29

i want to buy the new multlock MT5 rimlock but it doesn't seem to have a metallic tongue on it like my old multlock junior rimlock does, so does this mean i won't be able to install it? (the metal gate on my front door definitely needs the tongue to turn the deadbolt and whatnot)

here's what the locks look llike:

would it be possible for me to unscrew the tongue from my multilock junior and somehow put it in the new mt5 rimlock?

i haven't ordered it yet so i cant test but i was wondering if it can be done.

thank you alll so very, very much for helping a newbie like me!

Your old cylinder is a rim cylinder. The new MT5 cylinder you have pictured is a mortise cylinder. It will not have the long tail piece you need. Additionally, the new mortise cylinder pictured does not have the thru bolt screw holes used on your old cylinder.

You just need to specify RIM cylinder when you order the new MT5 and it should fit.

Blueagent, that "tongue" you are referring to is properly called a tailpiece. The same name is used for the part on the back of your new mortise cylinder.

Other than that minor terminology, Sammy's advise is correct. (And he used the right name, too).

not to correct the admin, but mortise cylinders use cams :)

thank you so much for letting me know! and thanks for teaching me the proper terminology for these things.

by the way, i just found another RIM cylinder called "Evva MCS" on ebay, here's the link:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Evva-MCS-The-B ... 2401191183

so do you guys think this EVVA rimlock can be installed in the same manner as my old multilock junior rimlock?

thanks so much again everyone for all your help!

I would think so. But good luck if you lose the keys! Very few people know the secret of picking that lock. And I'm not one of them. :(
