Comb Picks -Template or Scans

Postby Krebs » 7 Jan 2020 18:40

I have a master 140 on the way to me, and I want to try comb picking it. I want to try and make my own comb picks before buying some.

Does any one have a template for a comb pick for this lock.

Or is there someone with a set of comb picks who is able to scan them on a flatbed scanner, and forward the images?

I have been trying to find the appropriate lock and key dimension online, to work out my own design, but it is not going smoothly.

Thanks!

When you get the lock, just measure the spaces between the pins, make the width of the comb "bristles" slightly smaller than the diameter of the pins. The 140 would be easy to make a comb pick for because it is not a paracentric keyway.

Thanks for the advice GWeins2001!

I made up a comb using the key cuts for the spacing, and used the zero bit height of 0.110 inches for the "bristle" height, and 0.05 inches for the "bristle" width.

I have attached some photos of my pick.

I have also made up a template if any one wants to try and make one.

Just make sure it is actual size when you print it. The handle shape is arbitrary, feel free to shape it however you want.

Nice job and thanks for the template and specs that you used. Did you have any luck using it on the 140?

Yeah, it worked on the 140.

I think the teeth are little on the long side, as it opens before you push it all the way to the top, and won't open if you do get it all the way to the top.

I may try and file them down a bit, or just leave it as is. Perhaps some locks may need a bit more height. Either way, it does work on my 140.

As for the dimensions, I forgot to list the gap dimension I worked out from the cuts on the key. The "bristles/prongs" are 0.050 inches wide, 0.110 inches tall, and the gap is 0.070 inches wide.

Linked here is an updated template. The resolution of the image is higher, and the bottom bar/shaft of the pick is thinner. The original I just kinda eyeballed that dimension. Now it is closer to the pick I made.

Cheers.

Good job, Krebs. Nice to see someone do it themselves and the success is that much sweeter when you make the tools yourself.

You can fine tune length by removing the core from an old lock.
Some comb picks are too short and need filing between the bristles?
