Digital Keypad

Thinking of upgrading your door security? Getting a better deadbolt or padlock? Getting a new frame or better hinges? Not sure what brand or model to go with for your particular application? Need a recommendation? Feel free to ask for advice here!

Digital Keypad

Postby JohnJoeJ » 4 Feb 2020 14:50

I’m looking to get a digital keypad for entry to my apartment. I have a Yale series 8800 lock there now. Can a keypad be added to this lock set or would a new lock need to be purchased? The current lock is mortised in and I’d rather not buy a new door so there’s that too. Any ideas and guidance would be much appreciated.
TIA

Be sure that you are permitted to change the locks on your apartment. Most do not permit that.

If you don't mind sharing a bit more info about what exactly you're trying to accomplish, that might help us give better suggestions. For example if you're just looking to up the security on your door, you may be able to accomplish that for a lot less by simply swapping out the existing cylinder with something higher security. If you're wanting a high end commercial keypad with timed access, audit lists, individual codes, etc that you can put a quality cylinder in, you're looking at a several hundred dollar investment at least. If you just want to give your friend/neighbor/whatever occasional access without having them carry around a key, something like a Supra box on the wall may suit your needs.

Just looking for a keyless entry...not necessarily extra security. We may be doing AirBnB soon and didn’t really want a key box. Was hoping there was a digital keypad “add on” for my lock set and if not, easiest, fewest modification would be best.
Thanks.

I would check out the selection of electronic pushbutton standalone door locks at the link below (no affiliation, just a site I've used) if you're still looking for a Yale 8800 series replacement. Many/most of these would probably fit the bill, at least in terms of functionality -- price tags vary quite a bit. But everything in this category is designed to work on a single 'standalone' door -- i.e. nothing that requires wiring or networking, and most combine a pushbutton keypad with a mechanical key bypass (so you could give a code out to renters, but keep the key for your own use). The catch would be that with one of these types of standalone keypads, you couldn't change the code without being physically present -- if that's a concern, you might want to consider a 'smart lock' like the "August" or "Remotelock." There are a number of these now if you search for 'smart locks with remotely changeable codes,' and some of them even interface with the Airbnb API to automatically grant access to people who rent your property. I don't have hands-on experience with those, but it could be worth shopping around and comparing reviews, depending on your specific needs.
