Mosler Safe info

Hi all, I wanted to first say thank you for any response you all provide. I purchased this safe yesterday but haven’t had the chance to pick it up yet. My plan is to convert it into a pistol safe.
Any reason to not do this?

I was not able to find a tag or model number anywhere. I know it is very heavy and had a Mosler dial on it. Seems to open and close no problem. The seller thought it was around 50 years old.

Wanted to know what all you can tell me about it. I’ve Ben on google all day and can’t seem to find one like it. Let me know if the pictures below load

That's a beautiful safe! I see no reason why it can't still serve its purpose, even if it's old.

Cheers :)

It depends mostly on the local laws. In Europe it would not be allowed to use it as a pistol safe because of the missing certificate. You should check that where you live.

Its a lot older than 50 years. Check the handle and see if it has a number stamped on it.

Thanks for the replies guys. I am in the US so using it as a pistol safe is no problem.

I am having a roll back help me get it home next sat. Do I need to worry about “glass break” feature in this safe? I didn’t see any numbers anywhere but can look at the handle when I go to pick it up. Any idea of weight and is it a fire resistant safe? Should I have concerns with asbestos?

I only paid $50 but was planning on stripping the paint off and painting it black. Any reason to not Do this? Anything I need to look for with the lock? Seemed to open fine when I went to pay for it. I’d hate to get locked out of it.

There would be no glass issue with a safe this old.
Weight I would guess 2500-3K pounds.

There may be asbestos in the lining so take a small sample and have it tested before disturbing any of it.

Also keep in mind the paint probably has lead in it so take precautions in any refinishing.

Thanks for the reply. Am I better off losing my $50 I paid for this and walking away? I’ll have another $150 in it once I pay the roll back driver. I can get a used Liberty Colonial 30 for $800 and while it’s only a RSC it’s already good to store my guns.

In my opinion it is a nice, old safe. I would prefer it over any modern RSCs. And it is very likely more secure.

If you have the space for it go ahead and get it. AB if there is any is only an issue if its disturbed. Same with the lead in paint. I'll guarantee nobody will walk off with it.

Why strip the paint? Just paint over it. It's not a museum piece and you're not putting a high gloss automotive finish on it right?

Keep it simple

Now that I know it might be lead based paint you can bet I won’t be stripping it. I’m thinking about using these two. The expiry garage floor as a base and then the valspar textured on the outside. Should cover the imperfections.

Spatter paint like what is used on car trunks works good follow by a top coat. Covers all the imperfections. Most safes dont have a smooth finish especially old safes. The lower the gloss the better.

You know how people takr brand new cars such as BMW or Audi and apply a very flat black wrap to themm i think it's called "murdered out" it looks menacing and I bet a super flat black paintjob with a big white Smith & Wesson or Glock logo stenciled on the doors would look cool.

Just my 2 cents
